I want to do a research internship (lab research) over the summer. Unfortunately, I found out too late and can only apply to one. I was wondering whether any of you have done research internships not through a program but through your own contacts. Have you been successful? And for people who have shadowed doctors, if you shadow a clincial doctor do you actually go inside the patient's room?

what's shadowing?

I can answer the shadowing questions. Shadowing a doctor is just following him/her around to get a better idea what medicine entails and how to approach a patient.

Whether or not you get to go into the room depends on the level of comfort the doctor has and also requires the patient's consent. I've shadowed eye doctors who have let me observe laser surgery and I've shadowed dermatologists whose patients were too embarrassed to let me watch their treatments. That was still interesting as I got to see how these doctors run their offices, etc.. etc...

icy fire, where did you find your internship?
