I have a question about how college admission works. Does the reviewing order of our application affects our chances since the space are running out?

For example, like NYU right now, they review MCC applicants as the last group, so I called and asked their advisors about this question. Two advisors I talked to both told me it does not affect my chance because they look at the whole MCC group as a pool. However, some people already got their decision early this week while some people's application were even being reviewed. How could they possibly compare each other if they haven't look over other MCCers?

What if there are so many outstanding applicants this year and they exceed the number they can admit in that school? Are they going to judge those people who haven't been reviewed with a different standard? Like maybe they will only take applicants who are "over-qualified" in, and those who are as competitive as people who they admit earlier will be left out since they already exceed their space?
