Question about room assignment

Dad II,

Did your D get into Lincoln? It looks like Lincoln this year is 2-2-2-4, for 10 in a suite. My S was looking on facebook, and many (not sure about all) of the suites seem to be that way. My S sent his app. early, his acceptance fee the day after he was accepted, and his housing deposit the day after he received that to try to get into Lincoln-- so he is very happy that he did, and that there are only 2 in his room.

We were wondering how they would decide who got into the rooms with 2 and who got the 4. I wonder if it's purely first come first served, or do they take into account other things (like if you're messy or neat, quiet or loud, maybe if OSU is paying your room and board might they put you in a 4....??)

It seems as if it will be crowded this year.

Dad II, were you really told that you were guaranteed an 8 person suite? When I visited they just said that most suites were like that, but not all. There are even several threads on this forum about Lincoln that said several rooms had four people (haha I know because I made most of the posts.)

I mean, if dorm was really a tiebreak it's a shame that your DD is unhappy with her assignment. But you knew you were never even guaranteed a spot in Lincoln, no matter how early you paid, right? I've never seen anyone say that they guarantee anything.

It might not be too late to transfer if housing is the most important factor in college? I'd keep in mind that most people only stay on campus one year and college is four years, so choosing a college because you want a specific room seems strange to me.

ohiomomma, last year when we were dealing with housing issues (in regard to dorms on North campus) we were told that freshmen were in quads and sophomores and above were in doubles or singles. I don't know if that applies to West campus dorms.

My issue is that my daughter did not get her requested housing; she turned things in immediately and she is a sophomore. It was bad enough to have to go through this last year, but again . . . ugghhh.

She talked to the housing department and they said no changes would be made until three weeks into the quarter.

Sportsmama,
What housing did your D want, and what did she get? I'm sorry that she didn't get what she wanted. It makes me wonder even more how they decide these things. I thought that sophomores would have priority. It seems like the housing is quite an issue this year.

I just know that Lincoln tower was supposed to be 2 person rooms in 4 room suites -- 8 people (freshmen or sophomores). That's how it was described on the tours, etc. Now, it seems like there are a lot of 10 person suites.

Kelseyg, per your post #22. We fully understood that there was not never even guaranteed a spot in Lincoln, no matter how early you paid. That is why I said we paid fee early to ensure DD is in line for a spot.

When we did the tour, we were shown two suites in Lincoln and there was never a hint that 4 in a room was possible.

If you go to the OSU housing site and look up the room characteristics for Lincoln you will see that many of the suites list three doubles and one quad (you will need to punch in the individual suite rooms, like 2111-2112-2113-2114). It looks like it was designed to be that way and not a last minute surprise.

Last year in Lincoln there were suites with four doubles and a quad (usually 4 freshman) scattered about. Although my DS had a suite with 4 doubles. Actually for half the year they only had 7 because one kid relocated.

But I agree that being in the quad would suck in the sleeping and study rooms - although the bathroom and living area can handle 10 without problem.

Ah, but Penniless, they just changed that. After the housing assignments were given to us. As in, they literally took down that part of the website for a few days, so that at the time of assignments, most room were double, including mine. And then only after I got my assignment, days LATER, they changed it.

Again, for Lincoln, it can accommodate it just fine, it just wasn't nice that it was a last-second change that they seemed to not expect or anticipate.

And South Campus people crammed with a random extra bunk, where it's the same case and they changed the website AFTER assignments were made, those are the people I really feel for.

TheSpeaker, NO need to apologize to me!! Really.

Penniless, Speaker is right. That was one of my initial complaints. The room said it had a capacity for two, and suddenly the next morning the floor plan was pulled and a new one put up that afternoon saying the capacity is three. Lots of disappointment all around. We were told that they would each have a desk, but would have to share cabinet space, etc. And they're still trying to place a few hundred kids, so I guess we're lucky our kids have rooms.

My older DS is at Indiana U. and they're putting kids in lobbies, so it looks like this grade had a high population. It happened to be one of the largest graduating classes in DS's high school, but I didn't know it was a highly populated year all over the country and that's what I think we're dealing with.

Hope there is enough chairs for everyone in the classrooms. At least the honor students have priority to pick classes.

it's only the dorms that are overcrowed, I think it would be really difficult for the college as a whole to be overcrowded... it can support over 30k students, an extra thousand don't make a difference.
