I've been told that Cal will disregard SAT II scores for students applying to any college other than the College of Engineering. Is this true? If not, how much is it factored into my chances of getting in? For example:

SAT I score: 2300
SAT II scores: 700ish Math II, Bio M
GPA: 3.83 UW, 4.17 UC GPA (if I calculated it correctly)

*I'm applying under the Computer Science major for College of Letters and Sciences

Help is much appreciated! =)

Good SAT Subject Test scores (I’m thinking 700+) are brownie points, similar to passing AP scores.

Let’s talk about these brownie points a bit more. How much value does UC give to the number of passing AP scores? Say I’m applying to L&S,
Math II - 800
Chemistry - 730
Calculus BC - 5, AP Physics - 3, AP US History - 4, AP Statistics - 4, AP Chemistry - 4
SAT I: 2290

How helpful would the AP scores and subject test be?

your SAT2 scores are too low.
SAT2: math2, physics, chem, bio, etc…
AP: calBC, physicsC mech & EM, chem, bio, compsci AB, APush, etc…

SAT2/AP scores -> most important

Personal statement is extremely important, don’t screw around with that.

They don’t assign value to the passing scores/high scores. Berkeley uses holistic review and each applicant’s entire file is evaluated as a whole. You can read the explanation at [How Berkeley Selects Students | UC Berkeley Office of Undergraduate Admissions](Selection Process - Office of Undergraduate Admissions).

people who say the essays don’t count are wronnnnnnnnng. I think. My brother goes to CAL and went into the admissions office for me and the lady said “they highly value the essays, almost more than SAT scores”

Thanks for clearing up the confusion =)

Another question: As it currently stands, I have two very solid SAT II scores, 800 in Math II and Biology M, but a very poor Literature score, 630. Since Cal requests students to send in ALL SAT scores, will this be reflected poorly on my application?

High scores will add brownie points. Low scores are disregarded.

I want to add to what fashion2345 said … I have noticed that Berkeley has a tendency to overlook low test scores when everything else about the applicant is stellar.

well i don’t want to get into an argument on here, but remember berkeley is not stanford or some ivy league college that “highly value the essays, almost more than SAT scores”

I had a student who relayed a conversation she had with a Cal admission officer where that almost exact phrase came out of the admission officer’s mouth … “the personal statement is really important, probably more than SAT scores.”

But as a general rule of CC, for every piece of information, there is an exact opposite piece of information that exists somewhere else on CC. I guess ours just happen to collide on the same thread.
