I was wondering how there could be people on the wait list when the classes are not even filled yet on.

There are two primarily cases.

A certain percentage of the class seats are reserved for the major of that department and the waitlisted people are the non-major ones.

The class also has a lab and/or discussion and if that lab/discussion section is full, the person might waitlist the class with the lab and discussion section he wants instead of enrolling in a lab or discussion time that he doesn’t want.

Oh I see thanks for the explanation.

So in case #2 above, would I be able to enroll in a class that has a waitlist at CalSO? For example, one of the sections in a class I want to take has 33/34 seats filled, but there are two people on the waitlist. The class also has no category restriction

Thanks.

It depends on the class. If it’s a discussion for a math class, you can brute force your way in the section if you attend it for a week or two. If it’s a physics lab or a chem lab, chances are very slim unless you are #1 or 2 on the waitlist.

If the section has 33/34 seats filled and there are two people on the waitlist, I have to sadly say that one empty seat is NOT for you and you’ll be placed on the following waitlist. This might be similar to case #1 that somebody (maybe a DSP student?) reserved the spot.

Thanks, UpMagic. I guess I will have to look into other sections.
