Question about scholarships being used for housing

Hey guys, so I got that Tier 1 President's Scholarship for 5k per year, and I also got a 2.5k (freshman year only) engineering honors scholarship and the 2.5k (freshman year) national merit scholarship. Sooo since UT's tuition is like 9k per year, I had it in my mind that I'd have tuition covered. What I completely forgot about though was that I'm eligible for the Valedictorian Scholarship (highest ranked student in accredited texas public high school is exempt from 1st year tuition).

So basically I'm wondering if this is just going to overlap with my other awards and be useless, or is there some way I can use the presidents/national merit/engineering scholarship for housing or other fees or something? Or if not, do you think it would be possible to push back the freshman-year-only scholarships to sophomore year? I have no idea how bureaucratic and technical they get with their money (i imagine very much so, lol), but I thought perhaps one of ya'll was in a similar predicament and could fill me in.

Many thanks!

Haha, I got those exact same scholarships and a couple of grants. Here’s what they do: tuition is completely waived but you still have to “pay” $0 when you register for classes. The only change in my financial aid package after I got my tuition waived was the removal of some unsubsidised loans. UT will apply scholarship + grant money towards housing, ResNet, dining, etc. then deposit all the money leftover in your bank account or mail you a check. Free money :D

Thanks for the reply! That’s great news! When you sent in your proof of valedictorian status, did they send you any sort of acknowledgement or did you just see the 0$ thing when you got your tuition bill?

Thanks again!

I did it in person during orientation, I never got any confirmation other than seeing $0 as the cost of tuition.
