If SDSU calculates gpa based on classes only taken in 10th and 11th grade wouldn’t you want to take the least amount of a-g classes overall and 4 ap classes to get the best csu gpa possible?
You need to have 11 of the minimum 15 required a-g courses completed by the beginning of Senior year to apply to the CSU’s. If you took the lowest amount of a-g courses (4) for 2 years (10-11th), you would probably not have the required 11 courses completed by application time and would probably have no space in your Senior year to make up the difference. 15 is the minimum required, but to be competitive, most students have above the minimum.
You also need to remember that your HS probably has required courses needed to graduate that may or may not be a-g courses.
For many HS students, there are pre-req courses that have to taken before being allowed to schedule the AP classes or HS students are limited in the # of AP’s that can be taken starting in 10th and 11th grade.
Yes it is possible, plausible probably not.
Does your HS offer 4 AP classes for that a 10th grader can take? My son’s HS does not, only 2.
I will have 7 of the a to g courses done by the end of freshman year- algebra 1, geometry, spanish 1, Spanish 2, English 9, Art 1, and earth science
I am planning to take 4 ap classes- apush, ap world history, ap Spanish, and ap English
The only one I’ll take sophomore year is ap world history then the rest junior year
By the end of junior year I will have
15 a to g courses done (7 from freshman year) and I will plan on taking 4 more a to g courses senior year
1.So basically will my gpa based on the 8 a to g classes taken from sophomore to junior year?
2.Would that make my max possible gpa a 4.5 assuming I get all a’s?
Your CSU GPA is capped at 8 semesters of honors points so only 4 year long AP classes count in the calculation. Anything over 8 semesters will be noted ( beyond the minimum). It just will not be your AP classes counted in the calculation since there is No AP English for 10th grade or if you take Spanish 2, you still have more than 4 classes 10-11th that qualify for the calculation. Actually capped weighted GPA is 4.4. You usually have at least 5 classes/year that qualify. I would check with your HS to make sure you are not required to take a full time load. You cannot select which courses go into the calculation, all a-g courses be it regular, UC approved Honors/AP/DE etc … will be included.
How many classes do you have to take at your HS for Sophomore year? My son’s HS had 6 periods, so 6 classes of which 5 where a-g courses for both 10-11th grades so a total of 20 semesters (20 grades). If you get straight A’s it is a moot point since you are a competitive applicant with an unweighted GPA of 4.0…
Sophomore year I am required to take 7 classes and junior year I am required to take 5. I will most likely do only 5 junior year.
Do the classes I took in freshman year that are sophomore classes go into my gpa calculation?
Does sdsu require course load senior or junior year or do they only care about a g classes?
Only Cal Poly SLO will use your Freshman grades from the a-g courses for their GPA calculation. All the other CSU’s use a-g course grades from Summer prior to Sophomore to Summer prior to Senior year. SDSU considers HS course rigor very important, so if you take 5 classes Junior year, you want a rigorous schedule that year. Just remember that the GPA is capped at 8 semesters of honors points (4 year long AP/UC approved Honors/IB or DE courses). Anything beyond the 8 semesters will be noted as being rigorous but not contribute to your CSU GPA.
Thank you for all your help
