Basically, I don't have that great of a GPA (3.7 weighted) but I have a 2290 SAT 1...and I want to go to med school after undergrad. I don't want to do science/engineering for my undergraduate studies because the colleges I'm applying to (see below) are very competitive and I most likeley wouldn't get into their science/eng programs.

This is why I thought of choosing an arts&sciences major while completing prerequisites for premed so I can go to med school after I get my BA. Is this possible? And if so, can someone please explain how I do this?

I'm applying to:

University of Rochester
University of Notre Dame
Vanderbilt University
UCLA
UCSD

For med school, it doesn't matter what major you choose as long as you complete certain courses and take the MCAT. You can major in English or east asian studies or physics or biology or whatever.

ive seen people whove done theathre arts and get into med school lol...all they want again is a well rounded student IN UNIVERSITY doing the prerequistes and getting a high score doing it...id recommend an easy A major thats why most people go to engineering because its mostly calculation based...but if u want abstract check our philosophy and theology of science a great major and u will be indirectly correlating ideas into different subjects through this major( meaning ull touch upon everything because philosophy is how many subjects arose)

Thanks, frutiaspice and ambitousteen.

In my essay, do you think I should talk about my ambitions to be a doctor? I don't know if I should because my high school record might not be strong enough to convince them.

Do you know the names of the certain courses I have to take? the prerequistes. Also, do you know if there's any college that doesn't allow what you guys just mentioned? (Taking an easy major along with the prereqs for medical school)

just so u know your stats are good enough. i think you need to be more ambitous. A- gpa and 2290 hmm id say rochester and ucsd is a safety. vandy/notredame are matches. gpa might not be high enough for ucla but keep in mind non UCs dont care as much about gpa.

have you considered Cornell, Johns Hopkins, Northwestern, Tufts,
or liberal arts like haverford, and vassar,

its fine to major in something nonscience. but make sure you fullfill premed requirments. i think its like bio, chem, organic chem, physics, math

thanks ithacaiscold.

I actually found out my weighted GPA is only 3.6. So no way are rochester and UCSD safeties for me, which is why I haven't considered Cornell, JH, NW, or Tufts.

But so you are saying that I can take premed requirements no matter what my major is? even if it's not science?

The reason that many premeds pick science-y majors is because many premed prereqs and the reqs for their major overlap, so their schedule is less locked in. However, you can take the prereqs for premed with any major, as long as you have enough time! So beware of incredibly time consuming majors!
