I'm an accepted student for smeal and I have a couple questions. I just recently found out that you have to maintain a certain GPA to declare a major at smeal, 3.5 for finance, 3.2 for the rest. I plan on majoring in finance. How hard is it to maintain a 3.5gpa? I feel like maintaining straight A's when your already accepted into smeal is ridiculous. And how is it that students in DUS have the same opportunity as you to get into a specific major? Does anyone have more information on this? What if you have a 3.4, will you not be able to declare finance as a major? What if your below 3.2?

I’m not an expert by any means but from what I understand if you are already accepted into Smeal and you maintain the required GPA and take the required courses your freshman and sophomore years then you are guaranteed a spot in a particular business major. If you are in DUS even if you maintain the required GPA and take the required courses you are not guaranteed acceptance into a Smeal major because the numbers are capped. If this is incorrect Id welcome input from others with more experience with PSU/Smeal.

Im sure it is not a cakewalk to meet the requirements. Perhaps thats one of the many reasons why most Smeal graduates do so well after PSU and recruiters love them. Unlike many schools, they cant skate by with a low GPA and graduate with a business degree from Smeal they have already proven themselves to a certain extent. On the negative side Im sure some kids that are trying their best just cant meet the requirements, but that is life. Im not trying to be flip about it, just realistic. Hopefully my son is able to make it, but there is a risk. If you don’t make the requirement I think (but I’m not sure) that you can still petition for a Smeal major, but if not I guess you’d have to work toward a majort outside of Smeal, e.g. Economics in the College of Liberal Arts. I would love more info on this apect of the question.
