Question about Snyder Hall on Peabody Dr.

So as some of you know from another thread here, the university has a lack of living space in places like FAR, ISR, and PAR.

Now, we just talked with someone from Housing who told us that there are about 100 of 400 available spaces left in Snyder Hall, which is a substance free hall.

Now my question is, I know you can't have any drugs, alcohol, cigarettes, etc.. in the hall, BUT CAN YOU DRINK IN ANOTHER AREA LIKE FAR OR PAR.

I don't drink much, but say I'm at a party in a different building and want to drink some, am I still allowed to? Or because I live in a substance free hall, does that mean I cannot drink period no matter where I am on campus?

technically, you aren't suppose to drink in any of those dorms (PAR, FAR, or the rest of the 6-pack), but that doesn't keep students from doing it whatsoever. I had a friend that lived in snyder hall last year because his parents made him but that didn't keep him from coming over to scott and drinking or going out to the bars and eventually returning to snyder

Besides most RA's are pretty laid back and as long as you are not making it way too obvious to everyone they wouldnt care if you drink in snyder either!

Snyder Hall is not an ideal place for me but due to the lack of space right now, it's something that has come up now.

My mom at first thought it was a good idea and I think she still kind of does, but at the same time, YOU HAVE TO THINK WHY IS THERE LIKE 100 SPOTS OPEN THERE, WHILE MOST OF THE OTHER LOCATIONS ARE PRETTY MUCH FILLED UP?

Is it strict or something at Snyder Hall? I mean I don't necessarily want to be going back to high school here where they keep track of what you do and stuff?

that's weird. i tried to get SNyder, and i was still put in temp housing.

you have to talk to housing asap to take advantage of the 100 spots. at registration they made a special announcement of how there were 100 spots open.

hmm. i just emailed them, so hopefuly they will put me in that. sounds better than a temp dorm at the moment.

you shouldn't e-mail, you should call them.

so I ended up getting in Snyder, anyone else? also, any important information that I should know? I'm just glad I'm not in temp housing.

Actually to the person who said you shouldn't email, YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO EMAIL THEM, that's what they tell you IF YOU CALL FIRST.

I still haven't decided to go to Snyder Hall b/c I am unsure of this whole substance free crap because I think they might be real strict about it, AND I'M NOT GOING BACK TO HIGH SCHOOL.

Also, a co-worker of my mom told her that many people drop out within the summer months which opens up room that previously wasn't there.

And lastly, I emailed the resident director and the secretary of Snyder Hall AND NEITHER OF THEM HAVE EMAILED ME BACK ABOUT ANYTHING. And I emailed the RD last Wednesday. MAYBE THEY'RE HIDING SOMETHING?

I think that UIUC just sucks at replying to emails.

THe girl i've been emailing at housing has replied back very quickly on multiple occasions. In one instance i emailed her around 5:30, and i had a response at 5:45. Guess she just happend to be checking her email right at the time.

Ok, wow, this is incredible. After days of arguin and tryin to make the points by both myself and my mom(really helped out a lot), I finally got a room, Trelease, in FAR.

Which means that I don't have to settle for the substance free facilities of Snyder Hall and means that I don't have to be treated like I'm some small child to be told what I can and cannot do?

There's still 60 openings in Snyder Hall if others are concerned like I was, but I finally got a spot in FAR and should have a letter sent to me within 2-3 weeks. Good to know.

But with the emails, I sent an email to the resident director of Snyder Hall, AND HE DIDN'T EMAIL ME UNTIL LIKE 45 MINUTES AGO. AND I EMAILED HIM LAST WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON. Didn't email me until my mom called and told them to send me an email lmao.

I mean, what is it with them?

they're not working 24/7 you know.. they're people also who have lives. also this is summer and some of them are probably taking days off here and there. You shouldn't expect them to be sitting at their desks waiting for e-mails and phone calls. Also by last Wednesday afternoon, they probably already left the office. Unquestionably during the summer they probably have shorter hours and go home earlier.

Hey look, I'M AN INCOMING STUDENT and if I have a question, IT SHOULD BE ANSWERED IMMEDIATELY, not 1 week later.

Just like when my mom called and left a few messages last week, NOBODY CALLED BACK, NOBODY. So she calls and calls and calls b/c she's the one who argued a lot about it because parents have more power than an 18 yr. old kid. Who do you think they'll listen to more? A kid? Or a parent that has some power?

So, you know what, IT'S NOT THAT MUCH TO ASK OF PEOPLE TO ANSWER A SIMPLE EMAIL. And no, it had nothing to do with low working hours, BECAUSE THE GUY EVEN SAID HE NEVER SAW MY EMAIL.

Don't make excuses. People pay a ton of money to go to this school and other schools around the country AND THEY DESERVE TO BE ADDRESSED AND RESPONDED BACK TO IN A TIMELY MANNER.

Hmh. I listed Snyder as my first choice, and they still stuck me in temporary housing. I'm wondering where these vacancies came from and why I wasn't given one! Oh well, I'm at Hendrick now. Still, something isn't right with all this nonsense happening with their housing.

As for ignoring our questions and requests, I think it's the first taste of the standard treatment at a state school. We get to suck it up and find out own solutions.

yea i have to agree there. Snyder was my first choice, and i too was originally placed in temp housing.
