Question about SOP for grad school

Hello all,

Wondering how detail should I mention my research area interest on my SOP. I'm a electrical engineer major. On my SOP, I wrote about my interest in solid state devices in general. Do I need to go in deeper and describe an actual example?

Thanks in advance!

An SOP should contain sufficient information on what you are thinking of studying or researching, how you came to like what you are thinking of doing and atleast a glimpse of what you could think you would be doing after graduating and how a degree could help you in your career plans.

A well written deeper example might be very good in showing your passion and excitement but it might also restrict your research area to a certain topic. If you are very certain of what u wanna do then go for it, otherwise it might be better to discuss briefly 1-2 on going research projects in your area in the department giving examples on what interests you in them, or how they are a significant research and perhaps how you could contribute there.

I hope this answers your question!

I was fairly detailed in my statement about my research (well, about as detailed as I could to fit it all within the word limit). I described the overall purpose of my projects, how I approached it, quick explanation and analysis of results, and the significance of the projects. I also included quick statements about how I got into research, why I wanted to go to graduate school, and why the school would be a good fit for me.

Hope this helps! Google for help on SOPs for graduate schools and check out some of the links.
