For EM 306 (Statics) there's an extra 2 hours apart the actual 3 hours of lecture and PHY 303L (Physics 2) an extra hour apart from the 3 of lecture. Are these like problem solving/discussion hours that are not mandatory??

In many classes number of actual hours is different from credit hours you can get.

Many classes have a 1 hr/wk TA-led discussion session. For some professors attendance at these sessions counts for ~5% of your grade.

Ya Ya is correct for math and science classes that usually have labs, the number of hours of class time is usually more than the number of credit hours you get.

When I took statics last semester with Dr. Rodin, the extra 2 hour spot was for discussion/quizzes. The first hour was dedicated to homework review/questions and the second hour we always had a quiz.

You would be surprised. :)

Check some other classes besides Math and Science.

RTF 305, 314, 316, 317, 318…
ART 303, 304, 310, 311, 313 etc
T D 312, 314 etc
ENS 103, 105, 107 etc
PED 101, 103, 104 etc

The list will be very long if you just go through all available classes on the registrar’s site, not only what you have to take for your particular major.

My personal favorite is called N S 000 DRILL (zero credit hours and 3 h/week of some kind of mandatory activity)
