Hey guys so i would love to attend NYU. I am a rising senior from long island. Problem is i cannot attend without significant merit and aid. So IF i am accepted to stern(i will post my stats below...lemme know how they look), do you think i will get some help? other random facts; first generation iranian-american, parents escaped the revolution, decent income(~110k) but will not be able to pay more than 10-15k a year max due to declining income, loss of house, fathers poor business. Thanks all for the help! :) stats below, lemme know.

You may qualify for some financial aid based on your income level (minimal), but while you may be accepted to Stern, realistically I don’t think your stats put you near the top 5% or so at NYU. Stern itself does not grant merit aid–so the only merit you’d be eligible for would be the Martin Luther King Scholarship (only tippy-top students) or better financial aid based on the fact that NYU/ Stern really wants you (which I don’t think your profile warrants.)

So whereas the good news is that you may get accepted, the bad news is that you may have to come up with a lot of $ to attend. It is highly, highly doubtful that you will come remotely close to only getting a bill for $15K based on your stats and income. More than likely it will be the opposite—$15K in aid and a bill for $50K.

Good luck!

@uskoolfish thanks for the info…i was also wondering if you or anyone knows about the business and technology management major at NYU-POLY i know they are merging and will be full NYU in a year or so…would i get in with merit with my stats there? can i apply to both stern and poly?

also any other opinions of what i could do? any outside scholarships i could apply for?

NYU poly has been merging slowly with NYU for the last few years. At first they were granting pretty decent merit aid. I know that the merger has been fully approved and in the next year or so there will not be a separate application for NYU Poly … you will just apply to NYU and indicate Poly as the school. I think next year is the last year to apply separately.

The thing is that assuming your financial aid need is low, “good” merit aid is still going to be in the $5k to $20K range at NYU Poly–and at most schools for that matter. So in the past Poly may have given as much as $20K a year to students without need as merit aid. But considering the total cost of Poly will be approaching $58K or so (lower than NYU), you will still be hit with a bill for close to $30K to $40K given you are granted some need aid and some merit.

My advice would be to apply to as many outside scholarships as possible–including local scholarships–but remember that these are generally one time grants.

@uskoolfish, thanks for the advice. I will keep that in mind. but do you know if currently( will be applying next year) i can apply to both NYU-stern and Polytech? or is that not possible

Don’t know about applying. I would call the school to check. Besides, something important like that I would not rely on cc. Check for yourself since things change year to year.

Will do, thanks for the help
