Question about summer online classes!!

Okay, so this summer all I am doing is watching my sister. From June 27th-July 10th I'll be in California but all we'll be doing is visiting my grandparents/uncle. Not going to the beach or anything and I'll have internet and my computer. I was wondering if it is a good idea to take an online high school class. I am taking Spanish 3 and 4 next year but I really wanted to take AP Spanish my last semester so I was thinking of taking Spanish 3 online and taking 4 next semester then AP Spanish. OR Taking World Religions online so I can take AP Physics. How do colleges look upon high school online courses? Is it a good idea or no? Also how hard are they and how time consuming? My friend who is taking Gov't online now said that it's only 15 lessons or something. Also which is the best online course to take? THANK YOU! I really want to know because I have absolutely nothing to do this summer but babysit and do summer assignments for AP courses (which I'm already 1/3 done).

I really want to know before I get myself into something bad. I was thinking of Primavera or something. (Which I’d probably end up doing World Religions or an elective because the highest Spanish they have is something I already took).

Also, it’s only .5 credits for 90 hours. Will it increase my GPA if I do it?

Are you doing a college course for summer school?? Cuz i’m doing that for my math class, i don’t know if this add’s onto my HS GPA, since this is also my first time as yourself.

Is that free?

What website did you go?

OP, my D took online Geometry in the summer. She had changed school districts in 8th grade, and going from a crappy one to a good one put her a year behind on the math track. She needed the class to be able to make it to AP Calc by senior year. I believe she spent about 3/hours a day for 6 weeks on the class. Make sure you have a course that has access to your on-line teacher via e-mail or phone for any problems. She took hers through GA virtual school, and it was $600 for the course. D’s school did factor into her GPA, but it did knock her out of val/sal contention (class of approx 700 students) because even though she got an A in the class, it upped her classes by 1, and made the GPA suffer by a miniscule amount. It made her mad at the time, but quickly realized how insignificant that was. As far as how colleges will look at it, I’m sure they will think favorably that you did something productive as opposed to nothing. D was asked why she did it during one interview (an Ivy school) and said the interviewer seemed impressed that she took the initiative.

Well the ones that I am looking at is called Primavera. It’s an Arizona online school and it’s all free (though the classes are kind of ridiculous). There’s a summer program on there and I’d have to send my transcript, AIM scores, and a parent signature. It’s also virtual. It’s 90 hours for .5 credits and I was thinking of either just doing Law and Ethics and/or World Religions. All I have to do this summer is summer assignments and then start my volunteering at an elementary school.

Also, did it go on her transcipt? Or did she have to add it on her application?

Yes, it was on her transcript.

I did Precalculus from Byu Independent Study and my school automatically put it on my transcript.

Okay, would it be a good idea to take Law & Ethics AND World Religions? Would 2 classes be too much? Since they’re electives it should not be too difficult. Each class is 90 hours

puggy123. I was looking over BYU Independent Study. How was it? Is it for anybody in America or for a certain state? Was it hard? I was looking over it and I was really intrigued that they had a Philosophy class (I love philosophy).

^Anyone can take classes from BYU Ind. Study. It does cost money though, about $120 for .5 credit. I’ve only taken Precalculus from them (currently about halfway through Calc 43, or Precalculus II), and the class covers many more topics than the Precalculus at my school. I would say it’s kind of an “Honors” Precalc, as you have to memorize every equation including all of the Trig Identities and go into topics like Discrete math and Polar equations. I don’t know about any of their other classes, but I would suggest looking around on their website to find out more.

So the classes are typically hard? Would it be better to just take free courses from Primavera and take Law & Ethics and/or World Religions? How hard would it be to take 2?

No, definately not. What is the time frame for course? How many weeks? One thing to check out is if you have a final that may be proctered. My D’s geometry was at a local college approx 30 miles away.

No, everything is online I don’t have to drive anywhere because it’s not a college it’s an online high school that offers summer classes for regular students online. And it’s 90 hours so you can work for as many hours as long as you complete it in 90 hours I think within 6-7 weeks?

I have taken Primavera World Religions. I thought it would be interesting, but it was honestly really boring. I have also taken Psych A and B, Sociology A and B, and Child Development…if you are looking for an easy class, I would choose one of those. Btw, you do NOT spend 90 hours on these classes. They are 6 weeks long, and you could get away with spending 2-3 hours a week on Psychology. World Religions was more time consuming, though, because all of the material was very foreign; for Psychology, for example, most of the material is pretty obvious.

The effect it will have on your GPA depends on your school.

I already too Psychology and Sociology, though. Would Laws & Ethics be a good class to take?

Yeah; I would take Law and Ethics over World Religions. :)
