Gosh, it seems like Syracuse has such a solid, solid program right now… can any students, alumni, or parents talk a little bit about tuition… it seems like the website says the estimated cost is a little over 50,000… that is a lot… I have heard that syracuse really prides themselves in scholarships… is this true???
Also, I have a question about the georgraphy of the university… can anyone talk about where most mt kids take most of their classes and where the theatre is… i have heard that can be a long distance to the theatre from dorms is this true?

Hi Mtdude: My daughter just finished her freshman year at Syracuse, so I will try & answer your questions. She was totally impressed with the curriculum & instructors. She thought it was balanced, challenging & definitely pushed her in all 3 areas of MT. In fact, they just announced a new department chair for drama who is leaving Julliard to take the position. She has loved the fact that Syracuse offers a total college experience. In fact she turned down going to college in NYC for that very reason. However, you are not too far from the city (4 1/2 hours by bus) for weekend trips!
I think that you will find that most private universities will have a similar cost for tuition & room/board. My daughter did earn a Presidential scholarship which I think was based on her high school grades, etc. It was awarded after her acceptance letter came. She did not do anything to specifically apply for it.
There is definitely geography at the campus! In fact, my daughter lived in Flint on top of Mt. Olympus, the farthest point from the theatre. She got proficient with the on-campus buses and very fit from climbing the staircase multiple times a day. Next year she’s going to living in the BBB complex. The three “B” dorms are closer to the theatre & there’s not the giant hill to climb. I think if you request to live in the Arts community you will end up in BBB your freshman year. Otherwise, it’s just luck of the draw. And the majority of your classes will be in the theatre. She also had classes in Krause hall (beautiful building referred to as Hogwarts!) and then if you have academic classes they could be in other buildings. But plan to be in the theatre most of the time.
There’s a group on FAcebook, called Syracuse MT 2014. You can post on that & I’m sure students will answer you from their perspective.
Hope this helps!! And if you have any other questions I can try & answer or pass them on to my daughter. Best of luck!!

My D just graduated from the MT program at Syracuse today – in fact at the moment I am in a dorm room in the BBB complex! It is less than a 15 minute walk from the theater. I agree with goldust7’s comments – my D got in terrific shape freshman year walking to and from the theater. There is also a very good bus system which students use when the weather is bad, or if they live in one of the more distant dorms. After sophomore year, most students choose to live off-campus and many apartments are available closer to the theater.

Syracuse offers very good financial aid; there are many scholarships and grants available. Don’t let the $50,000 price tag scare you – most people don’t end up paying nearly that much.

The program is great; feel free to PM me if you have any more specific questions about SU.

Onstage, congratulations and best wishes to your daughter in her future endeavors! Mine has one more year to go and I can’t believe how quickly the time has passed.
