Question about taking a gap year and deferring admission

I've recently been presented with the opportunity to take a gap year, and live in Paris for a year and work as an au pair. I will be attending french language classes while I'm there, and it will be a great way for me to become immersed in the language and culture. I have one problem though - of the two colleges I'm still trying to decide between that I've already been accepted to, one only defers for a semester, and the other doesn't defer at all.

To get the whole french language immersion experience, I really need to stay for a year. Do you think that there might be any way to talk to the people at the school that will defer for a semester and see if they'll let me do a whole year?

Or will I have to apply all over again next year? I'm worried that if I have to reapply, I won't get in.

That sounds like it could be interesting and improve your app if you have to reapply, but I don’t know. That’s a really though decision.

Many schools, including H and P, have been long suggesting that their admits take gap years. the schools that I know of that don’t automatically grant deferrals are some of the state schools. If you’re planning to attend a school that won’t defer, it’s definitely worth asking.

You’re right, the school that won’t defer is the University of Mississippi. I suppose I should ask though, it can’t hurt right?

also, do you think with a decent basis in french and a full year in the country i’ll become fluent? or atleast conversational?
