question about TAP

I'm applying to UCLA as a Comm major, which TAP doesn't really support...but I do get the option of an alternate major and I'm still deciding which major to get.

It will be between sociology and english. Looking at the admit rates, sociology's acceptance rate is 36% compared to english's 48%

If I decide to make sociology my alternate major, by the time I apply I will have completed all major reqs for sociology. If I decide to apply as an english major I will not be finished with my major reqs until spring. I heard not finishing your major reqs by the time you apply is a big factor in admission, so based on both the transfer rates and major req completion, which major will be easier for me to get into, sociology or english?

Finishing pre-reqs in the spring will NOT hurt you. I say go for whatever major your interested in, and will still be happy with.

alternate majors aren't really looked at.... the tap advisor at ucla should have noted it at the tap conference.

what do you mean? my counselor said they do look at it.

JPNguyen, did you go to the TAP conference? from what i was told at the conference by the admissions officier, they do look at the alternative major if you get rejected from your first choice. meaning - it's like you are applying twice to UCLA.

I hope this is true...

although i do have this paranoia that if the admissions faculty for the comm. department rejects my application they just toss it away, forgetting the fact that I'm TAP and not giving it back to the admissions for consideration of my alternate major.

TAP is awesome... priority consideration for your primary major and priority consideration for your alternative. its a major safety net. as long as you have the prereqs done for the alternative as well you're fair game for it
