Hey CC'ers! I'm in the process of applying to Georgetown and have a question about the teacher evaluation requirement.

I have two teachers willing to fill this out for me, but the evaluation says the teacher should be from a "core subject." The one I REALLY want to fill it out is a teacher from my "politics of states and cities" class. She witnessed me founding the very first teen politics club, and doing some really great things with local politics so she would absolutely give me the best rec. But is she automatically out - in other words would she count as "core subject."

My other option is my AP Calc teacher who is my current teacher and also taught me pre-calc last year. She doesn't know me a whole lot outside of the classroom so I feel like her rec would be sub-par to the other teacher.

Also, the major I'm going for is politics which is why I was hoping I could have my politics teacher send in the rec.

Thanks!

If you had to pick one, pick the politics. That is a core subject for you. You can also send in two.

Oh okay great I didn’t know you could send in two so I’ll just go ahead and have them both send them in. Thanks so much!

I agree that you should send in both if permitted. But, if schools do ask for a rec from a core subject, they mean it. But the ‘politics’ class may be considered to be ‘social studies’, which many colleges consider to be core subjects. I think it is at Georgetown.

And don’t discount the fact that the teacher doesn’t know you well outside the classroom. Colleges want to know largely how you perform in the classroom, work well with others, etc. One admissions consultant wrote the following, which seems to make sense:

You also need to make sure that you choose at least one teacher in a core academic discipline. You are applying to college, not to a resort or a team or to a service club. Admissions officers want to know about your performance in and contributions to the classroom. If you like, you can add a second or third LOR from a band director, a coach, or the head of your youth group. These letters can help round you out as a person. But at least one LOR should be from an English, math, social studies, science, or foreign language teacher.
