I'm thinking about asking my AP World teacher to write a recommendation for me. World was my favorite class and it was my best subject. Thing is, I took world in tenth grade. Do you think it would look bad if I get a rec from a teacher I had sophomore year?

I just don’t understand this whole process. Why can’t students just pick whatever teacher they want, rather than them saying “we reccomend junior and senior year teachers…”? Shouldn’t it be just picking the teacher that knows you the best/you want to?

While it’s recommended that you pick teachers from junior and senior year, if you think your sophomore world teacher knows you better and will do a more thorough job, you should choose them.

The reason you’re advised to use teachers from 11th and 12th grade is because you have a lot of potential to change for one, and because your more recent teachers likely remember you better. That said, one of my recommendations came from a teacher I had as an extended substitute (he taught for a month while another teacher was out with health issues), and the other came from my tenth grade chemistry teacher. Nothing’s written in stone!

^ thanks! I definitely ask my world teacher.

Don’t you think a 10th grade teacher would be better than a 12th grade teacher? Your senior year teacher knows you for how short of a time before you ask them to write a letter…?

I applied with a recommendation from a 9th grade teacher (and a 9th&11th grade teacher) and I got into Wharton so I don’t think it matters too much what grade they know you from in high school

I was wondering…how long should it take usually for a teacher to know you before asking for an rec? I want to apply early, and I want to ask my current teachers (not that I have much of a choice). But I’m afraid that 3 or 4 weeks of “knowing” each other won’t be enough…any one has this experience?

@Fatum, why wouldn’t you have the option of using teacher’s you’ve already had? It’s probably not the greatest idea to use a 12th grade teacher who you’ve never had before. Unless you’ve been home-schooled your entire life and started public/private school senior year, you should probably get a 10th or 11th grade teacher’s recommendation.

I am also asking a 12th grade new history teacher to write my recommendation.Cuz I don’t like my former teacher and I quiet don’t have faith in his writing…P
i really have no choice.

@Ortsac, I feel a bit awkward to ask a teacher who I had so long ago (8 months~)! Do you all ask your old teachers? I just feel like maybe they are not quite as close with me after all this time…People here rarely asks for past teachers since there isn’t rly “early decision” in Canada so the teachers will probably be surprised or something… Thoughts??

8 months ago? Are you a semester schedule where your core classes switch after one semester? In my case, the teachers I have asked for recommendations had me for two full school years. One was 10th + 11th, AP classes, and 11th + 12th, at least one AP class each. I would only shy away from brand new teachers, 3-4 weeks, because they haven’t really had the opportunity to get to know you or your academic abilities.
