I am the president of our school's NHS Chapter and was hoping I could ask our sponsor for a recommendation letter in lieu of a teacher rec. He has witnessed my leadership abilities and social skills outside of the classroom. Does anyone know if I can do this (colleges will accept it?) or do I have to go to one of my teachers instead of him?

you need to look up the specific policies of the schools you’re applying to. most ask for core subject teachers

Like Ellie said, most colleges say that the required recommendations must be from high school teachers in core subjects. Many will allow you to submit recommendations from other people, but you can’t do that INSTEAD of a teacher.
