Question about the 2500 Scholarship

I just received my 2500 scholarship from national merit. However, it says in the terms that i can only use the scholarship for college costs and that any unused money needs to be returned. i thought that i would receive the money and that i could spend it the way i wished. my first choice college was rice, but im probably going to a state school for free. if i do, where would the money go? thanks :)

I believe that the money gets sent directly to the school. That’s what happens with my son’s money.

but im probably going to a state school for free.

When you say “free,” what does your state school cover? There may be still some uncovered costs…like books and such. Rarely does a state school cover the entire COA.

well, i have a full ride. i think it covers almost everything if not everything.

^^
Which school is this? Is this a NMF full ride?

UAB. University of Alabama at Birmingham. The full ride isn’t from being NMF or NMSF. So basically the 2500 isn’t free spending money? I hoping that I could save the money in my bank account or something.

well i looked at the website and it covers tuition, room and board, and fees. so i guess it included books but i dont think it included the meal plan. so i guess i have to use the money for the meal plan?

So I’m sort of confused. I also received the same scholarship but is it possible that I receive the 2,500 dollars AND money from my school for winning the award??

Board=meal plan. From what I understand, the money does not come to you. It goes to the college. So, just put UAB down as your first choice and the school and the merit corporation figures it out. I suspect the money goes to the school to help defray the costs of your scholarship.
