everywhere it says, "please refrain from submitting additional information." Does this mean that we shouldnt attach a resume? or does it mean that, in the space provided, don't say anything more than is asked for? also, the app doesnt allow enough space for me to type in the full name of the company for which my mother works for, is this ok? thanks.

do NOT attach a resume...there should be no need for it
abbreviate as best you can where necessary

woaaah, no resume? its a good thing that you told me in advance lol cuz i was planning on sending in a 2 page resume. i cant believe how simple the columbia app is. just entering ur basic info, activities, interests such as books and movies and such, and the one essay. is that really all??

shraf, is the "NOT" really that serious?

would it hurt to tell more about yourself, especially when you have other credentials?

hmm, mayb we should just put that stuff in the section for additional info? and a resume would prbbly b redundant if it wer just restating all that material. cuz thats all a resume is right, restating material?

I thought colleges would prefer that because it makes things easier when you list and organize everything?

If they preferred a different format, they'd ask for it.

Maybe this question doesn't belong here, but it's worth a try to ask...I'm applying to GS and in addition to my application I was going to send a video of my dancing with possibly a dance resume. Would this be a bad idea? My essay has a lot to do with ballet etc so I thought it would give them more insight into me. Thoughts?

what other "credentials" do you have that aren't already in the activities, employment, and awards sections?

they want you to list and organize everything within their application rather than see 10,000 different formats

if you must elaborate on something do so in the additional info but it is certainly not the place to put a resume which shouldn't really have anything beyond what you'll be putting elsewhere in the application. The additional info section has been discussed at length on this board...look for those posts to get an idea of what does and does not belong in that section.

GS is a whole different ball game since you're usually going in there with a lot more life experience than a 17 year old applying to undergrad. I can't really comment about it more specifically but maybe one of the GSers around here can give better advice.

what if we have other important stuff that we want to add thats not necessarily extra curricular. Like starting a company, or working in a 3rd world country or holding a charity event or doing research etc. Should we attach a resume then?

Hmmm, I put outside research as in-school EC b/c it's part of science research class I take... I would put starting a company or working in 3rd world country as outside EC. Sort of are.... Not sure though; just my opinion.

its hard to believe that all of those don't somehow fit into outside ECs, work experience and summer activities.

resurrecting this thread..

would it HURT to send a resume?
if not, I would likely do it...

i don't think you could submit a resume, even if you wanted to, right? the application specifically mentions to refrain from submitting additional info.

yeah i just read that. beneath the extracurrics places it says not to send additional material. eh, I'll have to think about this some more and see if I can get everything into it

I think the point of not sending supplemental info (like a resume) is that they want you to put down in their application those things that are most important to you. That eliminates the millions of awards that so many kids have...nhs, honor roll, ap scholar, etc. They want to see what you value -- because that tells them about you.

Since they are so specific about sending additional info, I would not suggest you send a resume. If you have something important that you feel you need to communicate that didn't fit into the rest of the application, I would include it in the additional info section...but I definitely wouldn't include a list of awards or activities that wouldn't fit.
