Question about the bane of every high school senior's existence:

So, college admissions essay topics.

I know colleges like to see some connection between your essay and your passion in life. But what if that passion in life is also very similar to your most important EC? How do you handle the common app essay AND the most influential EC essay at the same time?

For example: Kid X writes his college essay on how his piano teacher always expected the most from him and made him the hard working, diligent person he is today. Or how his experience teaching young children to play has broadened his horizons. Then he decides to beat the dead horse by writing about how playing piano is his most influential EC.

Do colleges WANT to see stuff like this? Or is it okay to write your personal statement for the common app on something completely unrelated?

I'd like a little input, please.

don't repeat, don't repeat, don't repeat (the irony right there is dripping)

So then how do you tackle a problem like that?

My son wrote about band as his most important EC. Then, in his main essay, he told about a time he brought his telescope to band camp (asked to by the band director) and spent a night showing everyone stars, galaxies, planets, etc. So it was a "band" incident, but it told more about him than just "band."
