I’m a senior and am thinking of applying to UVA this fall. I’d really love to major in English Literature/Creative Writing and minor in Education. However, I saw that the College of Arts and Sciences doesn’t offer any education degrees––but the Curry School of Education (obviously) does. I was wondering if it was possible to “combine” schools––that is, to get a major (BA) in one school and get a minor in another. I tried researching this on the university’s website but couldn’t find anything.
Thank you!
You can’t minor in education. You can’t even get a major in it. This is because teaching has a 50% career change rate in the first five years. To combat this problem (stranding college graduates with no career after 5 years), statewide there is a movement towards what UVA has, which is a 5 year BA/MT program. I went through this program so if you have questions let me know, but you would get your BA in English and your MT in Education in 5 years total. This would give you the option to teach English, but also do things with your English degree if teaching is not for you (which is true for 50% of new teachers as stated).
Thank you so much!
Hazelorb: 25 years ago, I was told that many public school districts didn’t like to hire people with masters degrees because they needed to pay them more, according to the contracts. At that time, most teachers started working with a bachelors, and then obtained a masters during the summers using tuition reimbursement from their public school employer. Is this no longer the case???
Then again, a large percentage of the new teaching jobs have been in charter schools, which can pay people whatever they feel like, regardless of degrees.
It is true in other states but not in Virginia. Once you get up to about 10 years it is hard to switch districts because of the higher pay. With a masters is about 1k more. Plus in the past they would help pay for your masters but there is so little cash in public ed, that was one of the first things to go. In addition you have to keep taking 2 classes every 5 years until you get your masters by law for licensure renewal (as stated now on your own dime), might as well get it before starting if feasible.
