Question about the drawing on the Rice application

So, I'm looking at the Rice application, and there is a box on the supplement with the instructions to "Fill the box to the right with something that appeals to you. Your response must be a two-dimensional, scannable image."

Can anyone explain this to me? It seems rather unusual, and though I'm quite able to complete it, I'd like to know more about it. Are there any applicants (or admitted students) to Rice that can maybe shed some light here?

Thanks!

P.S. I'm not looking for ideas here, but if you do happen to know that a lot of applicants happen to draw, say, duck-billed platypi reading Euclid's Elements while eating cheese puffs, please do caution me not to draw that. ;)

Do not put anything related to Rice (the food). That has redefined cliche.

The box is about YOU. If a duck-billed platypi reading Euclid is what conveys your character, then by all means go ahead.

I made a little booklet with pictures of my pet rescue owl. Something that was unique to me, and had something to do with Rice.

Good luck!

I see this drawing question on the preview application(paper version) but not on common app itself, any idea why??

It is actually in the Common App, look under the “Rice Supplement” at the bottom. There will be a “Signature Page” (I think thats what its called) for you to download, fill out, scan, and upload. The drawing question is on there.

^^ yes. It is part of the Rice supplement.

OP - does this answer your question? Or do you have more ?

In late '03, before the scannable part, DD put a scrap of fabric. I think DS put the photo of a tennis player swinging at the net… I wouldn’t sweat it too much! ;)
