<p>Do they have to somehow relate to science and technology? </p>
<p>Even though I have a deep interest in those fields I chose to write about other things; will I be at a disadvantage for this?</p>
<p>It's more important to write essays that reflect who you are than to write them about science and technology per se.</p>
<p>I mean, hey, we all like science and engineering around here, but we do other stuff too. And an application provides limited space, so I'd say it's more important to give a complete picture of yourself and your interests rather than driving home the science punchline over and over.</p>
