Does anyone else ever wonder how the averages are so low? I mean, 28-33 on the ACT isn’t bad, but that means that 25% of all the applicants had <28 on it. Does UPenn (and other prestigious schools) lower their averages for collegeboard.com?

Look at the Penn website, there it says 31-34.
Collegeboard uses numbers that are not quite up-to-date.

Most of the kids from my HS who go on to Ivy League schools are recruited for sports, typically crew (rowing), and lots of them have subpar test scores... Sometimes 600s on each SAT section.

On princeton review the average is 30. On the ACT report the middle 50% is 29-33. I don't know who is telling the truth.

One possible explanation:
Peterson's is using the same numbers as Collegeboard (28-33), and in the International student section of Peterson's they say that the figures they are using go back to the 2004-05 academic year, so my guess is that their adission stats were true for the class of 2008.
And probably there are numbers for the classes of 2009 and 2010 around, too; that would explain 3 different sets of admission stats.

withonevoice, I don't appreciate your generalizations about athletes, moreover althletes in crew/rowing. I am a rower and I can honestly tell you that all the girls on my team applying to Ivy Leagues have stats as good as most CCers, if not better. We are National Merit Semifianalists, in the top 5-10% of our classes and also participate in school activities PLUS 20+ hours a week of hardcore rowing. There are few individuals who can honestly say they do this. While I agree many athletes slide by admissions with poor score, definitetly not up to par, this is not always true. While it sucks, that is life and I think at somepoint, if we don't get to go to Penn or our top choice, it wasn't meant to be.

Um, I'm not making a generalization... I'm relating a fact about the majority of recruited athletes from my HS.

you know what, i agree with both loquacious and withonevoice. i dont think athletes should be given the priority they are, but i also ackgnowledge that there are some really bright and academically motivated athletes out there. it just boils down the the person in the end.

subpar test scores... Sometimes 600s on each SAT section.

since when are 600s subpar test scores???

it is for an Ivy.

u do realize they're talking about Penn, which is in the ivy league...its almost fact 600s are subpar for an ivy league w/o a excellent hook like recruited athlete....on the basis of the sat's in general for everyone, 600s on each section are good scores, just dont think they're good enough for Penn unless you have a special hook.....im not saying ppl dont get admission but it has to put an applicant at a disadvantage compared to his peers

For any top college, most people need to consider the 25% as the floor. The people below the 25% are the recruited athletes (who usually have lower scores. Its a fact.), URMs, development candidates/legacies, and super hooks. For everyone else, the 25% should be around the minimum and the 75% should be the average.

^^^wow so ur saying a 34 on the ACT is average...i wouldnt go that far but i think your "25% is the floor" is correct but 34 is average is just crazy....then why is it considered to be a top quintile score for penn admits

i got a 690 on M, damn lol

cant argue with that logic......

its not abt ur intelligence/capacity/potential, its about ur opportunities/focus/upbringing. i go to school with hitmen, dealers, etc. they're a leeeetle bit too distracted to be studying for the sats. and its a fact that ppl who come from disadvantaged socioeconomic backgrounds are more likely to be focusing on ways to bring money home earlier than spending madd Gs on college. of course, that has to change somehow. but for now, its the ugly truth.
the terminator, heck yeah - be a bamf, defy the stereotype. gooo you!

money, money, money

or athletic hooks...and ur in. :P

paro: hitmen? Seriously? That's probably one of the most amazing things I've ever heard.

so then wat is the mid 50% for sat scores?

amazing? no. terrifying? heck yeah.

this place is too romanticized. its not as "miami vice" as u guys think it is. i just want out. :(
