I've been doing some research on The New School, and from what I've found so far, the unconventional teaching style and curriculum seems perfect for me. However, I was wondering if you have to choose which specific college you want to attend your freshman year. For example, could you go in not knowing if you wanted to go to Lang, Parsons, or the general studies college? Or, could you simply enroll in The New School itself and decide later on which college you want to pursue, taking a few classes from each during your freshman year?

Thanks in advance.

You have to apply to and be admitted to just one of the schools. You can, however, take classes at the others.

You might want to consider applying for a combined BA/BFA dual program from both Eugene Lang College and Parsons if you are interested in both.

Then you can have the opportunity to be in two colleges within The New School at once. Maybe if you end up happier with one program than the other, you could streamline down to one at some point, but you also may benefit from staying in both and having a more diverse and well-rounded experience and dual degree in the end.

Or apply to Lang and create your own major that includes several diverse interests. Having the opportunity to take courses at multiple schools within the university is a plus. If you have specific courses or questions in your particular situation, you could ask. They seem open to helping students create their own programs if that’s what you’re looking for.
