Question about the prompt for CAS applicants ("What work of art, music, science...?")

Hello, I've noticed that the prompt ("What work of art, music, science, mathematics, or literature has surprised, unsettled, or challenged you, and in what way?") does not include films/movies. I'm sure that whoever came up with the prompt didn't just forget to add films/movies haha, so I was wondering if writing about a movie would be consistent with what the prompt is looking for. I don't want to annoy whoever reads my application by straying from the prompt.
Thanks! :)

I guess it depends - is it an art film or a popular culture film?

Definitely pop culture.
It tells a story, the same way a work of literature does. Since the prompt expects the writer to speak about the chosen work’s influence, I don’t see why writing about a movie would be a problem. But, again, I’m not trying to test the limits of the reader. It would comfort me if someone from UVA admissions could reply haha.

I don’t think you should write about it, then, but you’ll have to see what DeanJ says.

Thank you for the feedback! :)

People have definitely written about film in the past. Be careful with pop culture, though. Remember that these essays aren’t the kind you’d write for class. We’re supposed to learn about you in these essays.

Do you want to use this movie because:
a) It’s a great movie and the (director/actor/cast) did an amazing job
or
b) this film had a profound affect on me and changed how I think/act

If it’s b, we want to hear about it, but we want to hear about the change it had on you. We don’t need a paper about the film. We want something more personal than that.

I hope that helps. :)

Definitely b! & Thank you for replying :)

Don’t worry! I wrote about a John Mayer song and got in EA OOS  good luck!

Would sign language be considered a work of art? I know it’s kind of far fetched.
