Question about the term "First generation college student"

Does this only refer to when one's parents didn't attend a US university/college, or a college/university in general.

For example, my parents did go to college, but in India, not the US...

If your parents or a parent has matriculated from a college or university regardless of where they may have been, then you most likely would not be considered a "first generation" student. If they simply attended college but did not attain their degree, you may be technically considered a first generation student.

What if you're One and half Generation college student (:D) Only one parent attained a degree (the other dropped out)?

I second that. My father never graduated from college, but my mother did. I'm wondering if schools give any weight at all to this.

first generation refers to either parent so if one attended and the other did not you are not a generation college student.

I know I say this A LOT, but small small world!

Thanks for the info sybbie!

does it matter if grandparents attended college but your parents didnt-are you still considered 1st generation?

What if my parents graduated from school in Afghanistan - and the college is no longer there?

(And, what if my older brother goes to community college?)

^ Then you are not first generation; your parents still went to college somewhere, even if the school no longer exists.

what if one of your grandads went to college but neither of your parents did?

This might be of help: http://www.ocair.org/files/knowledgebase/PolicyIssue/firstgeneration2004.asp

Some variety in interpretation. However, at the school where I work, first generation college means no generation coming before you earned a bachelor's degree in any country. This means grandparents as well as parents. Both parents must fit this definition, not just one.
