Hi, I was just looking at ■■■■■■■■■■■, and I saw a notice that college admissions officers were looking around the website. Does that imply that using ■■■■■■■■■■■ is bad? Can admissions officers identify applicants? And what would they do? Also, I’ve read that sometimes admissions officers come to this website. Again, is there anything wrong with students using this website? I’d appreciate any answers. Thanks!

As long as you're not writing bad stuff on your profile, I don't see how admissions officers would be turned off by it.

Like insulting other people? (I haven't done that, but I have seen others do it) All I've done is talk about the admissions process with other people. Ok, thanks!

they might think you're a little obsessed/crazy [could be a good thing]

it depends where you are going too, if you post in a specific college area a lot then they may notice you, but i doubt they go to every forum

what about prstats.com? does anyone know what is so bad about that site?

it just seems weird to me that adults come to this site. shouldn't the admissions officers be making important decisions, not reading what teenagers are saying about their application problems?

They might want to use it to see where else you are applying. (That would be the biggest concern for them.) I.e., if you're applying to good school and are a good candidate, a slightly less-revered school might be hesitant to accept you because they'd assume that you would choose the other one....

But maybe I'm wrong.

There's nothing wrong with using that site. In previous years, students ranked their schools by preference. This was probably the most damaging information there. However, now schools are just listed alphabetically.

Admissions officers can find you anywhere. Including here.

i wouldn't post stuff that admissions ppl could identify you with. like, your essay or exact scores.

Hi, I'll just jump in with a few reasons why adults read college admissions sites. The number-one reason is that those adults have children who will be going to college sometime. I read a lot of the forums here to get some idea what the process of college admission is like these days: I applied to college in the 1970s, and a lot has changed since then. I lurk (and occasionally post) as much as I do because now some of the parents here are like my real-world friends, and I am cheering on their children.

[wild guess mode on:] I supposed college admission officers might wander by and read posts once in a while to check what the various applicants are saying about various colleges, especially their own. I think each college is likely to have some staff members who desire to know what people are saying about that college in public, and for a few college officers (probably NOT admissions officers) that may even have that duty as part of their job description. [wild guess mode off]

I think it's probably more effort than it's worth in MOST cases for an admissions officer to try to figure out what real name is behind each screen name here, although in some cases that is no effort at all, as some applicants describe themselves in great detail. So far I have figured out the real-world identity of two kids I "know" in real life (one as the sister of a girl I know locally, one as the son of an online friend in another state) simply by casually reading posts.

I wouldn't WORRY about who else reads this discussion board, but I wouldn't be nasty online either. I wouldn't be nasty anyway, because one might as well say nothing at all if one has nothing nice to say.

Good luck to all of you in your applications.
