ok,
So I did not send in FAFSA FOR UCLA Or UC San Diego until now.

I had extreme need (only one parent making 10K a year)

My grant for UCLA (out of state) was:
Total costs: 44,000
UCLA Grant: 10,000.

Is that normal? Could I have gotten--20,000 OR 30,000- IN GRants if I applied by March 1st deadline?

Thanks for your response. Before responding/giving opinion, please note how famliar you are with UCLA's financial aid policies.

I don't think that it was a matter of timing, It is highly unlikely that you would have gotten any more aid unless had you applied earlier unless you were recuited to play for them.

Remember UCLA's goal is to provide an affordable education for their in-state residents (their tax base). As a public university, they just don't have the resources to have given you 20,000 OR 30,000- IN GRants no matter when you applied.

Bcos you are OOS, the answer is negative.

By policy, all UCs require self-help, which is work study and loans for you, and, perhaps, a small loan for your parents. But, unfortunately, the UC's rarely waive the $18k tuition charged to OOS kids. To be fair to in-state apps, and make finaid $$ stretch farther, UCs typically treat OOS kids the same as in-state for finaid packages. In the UC methodology, cost of attendance is $20k (instate), your self-help is $7k, your parental help is $3k, and they covered the rest with a $10k grant -- same pkg they would have awarded to an in-state kid who applied on time.

Rant: it really bugs me that the UC's do not make it clear on their websites that OOS kids must pay the $18k, unless the student receives a Regent's Scholarship.
