Can I transfer to a school [Suffolk University in Boston] after one semester at UMass Boston or an accredited community college? If I don't get into Suffolk, it'll be by a VERY narrow miss and because so many people from my school applied there, so a semester with A's at a lesser college would boost my chances, right?

Am I allowed to transfer with that amount of credits?

Suffolk does allow transfers after first semester but consider the issue you would face at that time. Assume you do not get into Suffolk now and then attend another school first semester in Fall 2009. To transfer into second semester, your transfer application would be due by about mid-October of your first semester at the other college and then they make decisions by second week of December. You would officially have no semester grades at the time you apply and decisions are made. Transfer decision would thus depend heavily upon high school record and SAT or ACT score. If those weren’t good enough to get you into Suffolk originally, you should assume you are going to face a probable barrier to being able to transfer. In other words, you will likely be better off trying for second year transfer so that they have college grades to rely upon. In fact, Suffolk says it relies most heavily on college grades not high school record or test score for a transfer into sophomore year but the opposite for first year/second semester transfers.

I’m not sure what your grades are like, but unless you have under a 2.5 gpa I wouldn’t be too worried. I got in EA and while Suffolk is a great school with a lot of great opportunities, I think around 80% of applicants get in. PM me if you have any questions!
