Question about transferring from UCF to UF Engineering

Hi! I am currently a freshmen who is studying at UCF. Lately, I have been thinking a lot about transferring to UF Engineering. It would be very helpful if I could get any information and advice on if it would be a great idea.

My background is that I just started studying at UCF last year(Summer 2018) as international student and I had the intention of majoring in some sort of Hospitality Management major since I thought UCF Rosen College of hospitality management would be a great college for me for future job opportunities. In addition, I believed that UCF (Rosen) college was well known in the state of Florida; thus, I set my path to come to Orlando for hospitality program.

However, since I had been in here for about a year, I had come to realize that hospitality management was not my real passion from my various new experiences. I wouldn’t list the reasons since there are so many factors. Now, I have real interest in pursuing engineering career(specifically electrical engineering) since I had exposed to various technologies and applications of engineering in United States. I visited JF Kennedy Space Center and amazed by how wide and useful the field of engineering is. Where I came from, the engineering education field is not developed and my understanding of engineering was very limited to basic applications such as building a bridge, installing the lightings, etc… So, it was a very eye opening experience for me.

I am currently taking pre-requisite engineering courses at UCF, and my current GPA is 3.8 . I hear a lot about how UCF engineering is comparable to UF from forums and students around me. I honestly believe that UCF engineering is a well recognized school in Florida; however, being an international student, I would need a “prestige” factor when I consider the school since I will be heading back to my country after graduation.

I had taken total of 44 credits( I doubts if all are transferable credits) and I am planning to complete the engineering pre-requisite such as Calc seris, physics 1,2 and chemistry1,2 at UCF. If everything goes well, I intend to transfer by Spring 2021(I know it is a long way to go).

The problem is that does UF accept transfers from other public universities such as UCF?
it says minimum 60 transferable credits are needed. However, by the time I complete the pre-requisites, my credits hours would be around 80+(possibility 90+) since I had taken non-engineering related classes and foundation classes such as college algebra, pre-calc and trigo. How does UF see this? Does UF counts them?

Moreover, should i just stick to UCF engineering program? i have no problem sticking to UCF too as it is a little bit cheaper in terms of tuition and I had made some friends.

Thanks!

Nothing wrong with sticking with UCF or with transferring to UF. UF does accept transfers students from other state universities, like UCF.

The most common reason to transfer from UCF to UF is to take an engineering major that’s not offered at UCF. EE is offered at both schools. EE is not a limited access program, so with a good GPA, you should be able to transfer.

Thanks! Should I contact the college and department advisor for more information on how the transfer credits works for my situation in advance, like before a year of application or now?

Sure, you can contact them at any time. You could also ask if they could setup a department tour.

Hey! any updates on getting information on how to transfer yet? I was wondering if you are able to transfer to UF going into your sophomore year of college.

You should also consider internship opportunities. UF does partner with many great companies…out of city/state. UCF offers a large array of internship opportunities within driving distance of the campus since they are so centrally located and surrounded by businesses, some which specifically employ EEs. It may be helpful for you to consult with people in the Engineering dept/career center to ask these questions.

@Salchipapa - Can you pl shed more light on internship opportunities that UF provides especially for Engineering…my D got accepted for Mechnical but eventually thinking to change Computer Engineering or anything related to Artificial intelligence.
