Question about transferring to UCLA. Help!

So I'm going to apply for transfer admission for UCLA (my other option is USC, but I think I kinda know the requirements to get in.) Everyone's pretty much told me that as long as I keep my GPA high (I have a 3.92 right now, but it'll probably drop to a 3.82 after the fall semester) and write a really good personal statement, that I would most likely get in (and that it might help that I'll be 17 when I transfer as a junior, and come from a CCC). However, today I was talking to a guy in my class who basically said "Yeah, now it's almost impossible to get in a transfer at UCLA because they're making all the majors impacted, and expect a bunch of extracurriculars and work experience. I've know guys with a 3.9 who got rejected for transfer admission." The thing is, I have NO work experience or extracurriculars, so now I'm really worried. I mean, the major that I'm applying for (Philosophy) only had 302 applicants, and 209 got in, which is a 69% admittance rate, so I think that kinda helps me, but still. Should I be worried? What should I do to improve my chances? Thanks for any help!

You have a high GPA and Philosophy is not too competitive. I think you should be in, good luck!

I know you’re in! Don’t listen to what that guy said. Make sure you do all of the prereqs, or at least most.

I’m also applying to UCLA for the Fall 2010 semester as a transfer student. When I transfer I’ll be 18, because I did Middle College at a Community College. At the end of the fall semester I’m going to have a 3.57 GPA with 4/5 of the major pre-reqs done as a Psychology Major. Philosophy is my backup major. Since UCLA does have psych as an impacted major, and the average GPA last year for those that got in to my major was a 3.7, I’m probably not going to have the best chance.

However, I do have 100+ volunteer hours done over the last three months (working with kids and the elderly at an assisted living center) and I am also working on a sociological research project. Basically, I’m thinking that although my GPA is low for my major, my volunteer work and independent research can hopefully provide that boost I need to get in to UCLA.

The average GPA admitted to UCLA last year for philosophy was 3.49, and you’re well above that. The number 1 aspect of your profile that UCLA looks at is your GPA and completion of major requirements. With a 3.9 or 3.8, I would say you are clearly well above that average, and have a great shot at getting in. Have you completed/will complete your major requirements?

I know it’s quite late, but you could try doing some last minute volunteer work or project to pad your application for UCLA. It may be rushing things, but at least you could list something altruistic, and they’ll appreciate that. Overall, I think you have a really good shot at getting in with that major, and I wish you luck!

You’ll be fineeeee that is an AMAZING gpa
But what is this about every major being impacted!? Why would they do that now of all times haha.

Thanks everyone! That makes me feel A LOT better! Granted I’ll have to keep my GPA up and do a great personal statement, but at least now I know there’s hope!

emilsinclair9: Wow yeah, I didn’t see that the average philosophy GPA was a 3.49. That gives me even more hope! Um, when I submit my application, I’ll need 5 classes, but they’ll all be completed by the end of spring semester. The thing is, the two Philo classes I have left, 120 (History of Philosophy: Modern Period) and 116 (Ethics of Modern Life) may not be offered in the spring, but I’ve heard that if the class isn’t offered then they won’t penalize you for it. But yeah, as long as I can get those classes, I’ll be done with both the IGETC and my major requirements.

Yeah, I was thinking that I should try to find some volunteer opportunities, but the thing is, don’t they ask when you started the activity? I mean, if it says that I’ve started all my activities in October 2009, won’t they see through that and realize I’m trying to pad my app?

JeremyBeach: Thanks! And I have NO clue! It would be pretty stupid to think that. The other thing I just thought of is that maybe the guy he knew with the 3.9 who got rejected WAS in an impacted major like Political Science or Biology.

“At the end of the fall semester I’m going to have a 3.57 GPA with 4/5 of the major pre-reqs done as a Psychology Major.”

psychology only has 5 pre-reqs?!?!?!
my major has 15…

Yeah, to my surprise Psychology only has 5 prereq courses for UCLA. What’s your major, guitar? 15 prereqs… That is unbelievable, but at least you’ll know you’re well prepared prior to enrollment.

molecular bio.
I took a psychology course last summer and it was the best class ever!

Just want to add that I was in a similar situation. I’m a Junior at UCLA and I just turned 18  You shouldn’t worry, I was admitted with similar stats, 3.95ish gpa and no extracurriculars/ work experience at all.

the guy u talked to is an idiot and is destined to transfer to a CSU, philosophy is one of the easiest majors to transfer to at UCLA. with TAP, you’ll get in
