Question about Transferring

Here's the deal, I'm going to be a freshmen at Rochester Institute of Technology(RIT) for Civil Engineering Technology. But the thing is I was completely unaware that Civil Engineering and Civil Engineering Technology are completely different. So I decided that I must try to transfer to a different school with Civil Engineering after my freshmen year. So would anyone know how hard it would be to transfer from RIT that has the dreaded quarter system to a different school for a different major? I'm mostly concerned about what courses I should be taking at RIT during my freshmen year and whether or not the credits in the quarter system would actually be considered. Another thing is that my friend suggested that I change my major to Mechanical Engineering for my freshmen year then apply for a transfer. Also I'm going to apply to many schools for transfer but UMass at Amherst seems to be the best choice for me. So, any help would be GREATLY appreciated as I feel like my future would be in jeopardy. >_<''

Someone had asked a similar question a while back but about a different major. Your first two years of college is just basic courses. You don’t get into your major until your junior year. However, there may be some pre-requisites you are required to take because of your major. But since you are a first semester freshman you have nothing to worry about. But to be on the safe side start emailing the different schools you are interested in about the courses you are going to take. This way you don’t end up taking classes that you don’t need or can’t transfer over.

Ah I see but isn’t there the issue of transferring credits? Isn’t hard to transfer credits from a quarter based college to a semester based college because the credits wouldnt match up?

That is why I recommend that you email the different schools that you are interested in because I do not currently attend a quarter based school. Therefore, I can’t give you a straight answer.

Oh I see, well thanks a lot for your inputs tho. It was really helpful. :]

No problem…Good Luck.
