Question about transfers and college in general

So I'm entering a CC as a first-year and am a bit confused on how the transferring system will work. I somewhat procrastinated a bit since I underestimated how much of a struggle college would be and couldn't register for my desired classes. I plan on trying to transfer to USC in the Interactive Media Division but can't seem to find much about transfers. There are some requirements for transferring but are there any GE requirements in order to transfer?

Honesty, I'm very flustered about college in general. The fact that it's so different than High School makes me feel uneasy where to take the next step. All I've done so far is register for what was left of the open classes according to the GE requirements of the UC's and CSU's. I'm not very familiar of most things pertaining to college and am just trying not to fall out of line. Can anyone give me more insight on what I should be doing? I want to major in Software Development/Engineering but don't know where to start. People tend to give me different info and it completely confused me as to what needs to be done. I enrolled in a CC to play it safe and assimilate how college works but as of now I'm lost. I just ask that someone can give me useful info on how I should be going about in college.

I seem to have a destination in mind but don't know how to pave the road to it. If someone is willing to lend a hand, I'll fully cooperate and greatly appreciate the help. Thank you!

Get your useful information from Primary Sources. Like the written text on UC’s pages are usually spelled out, so it is good if you pick classes that way this semester. Only use secondary sources like message boards or ‘people’ to supplement or bounce things off of, but don’t rely on anything being correct that you don’t personally check out yourself from a Primary Source.

Make an appointment and go see an adviser at the CC. Outline your goals. Have a list of questions and take careful notes. Find out about the Transfer Admission Guarantee to UC and when you need to arrange to have your written guarantee. Find out any tips about registering as early as possible and getting in before classes are full. This is a major issue with California Community Colleges now with the funding problems they are having. You might not be able to get your UC transfer in 2 years.

When you are at a CC, CSU or even UC you need to take care of a lot of things for yourself. You have to read and figure things out and be in control of your program. You need to self educate about this. Don’t wander around confused. Be proactive. At a private college you usually have a little more support and resources to access.

You are much more likely to be able to transfer into a UC than USC. UC’s take many more transfers and have a pipeline from CC’s. You are guaranteed a transfer to UC if you follow the guidelines laid out in the and get the written guarantee. but to get into the UC you prefer, you must be an truly outstanding student and keep your gpa very high. For some transfer colleges your role in the college or community leadership can be very important too. USC wants to see A and B+ grades.

USC spells things out on the transfer page. They don’t have any particular GE classes or amount of units you have to take. You should just make sure the classes you take are transferable for their GE requirements (look them up.) The UC accepted ones should do. You can even see from the USC transfer page that they indicate you do not need to take all your Gen Ed before transferring because you won’t be taking advantage of the strong offerings at USC.

This USC transfer brochure has more details on requirements. It also shows that 60% of transfer students come from California CC’s, or about 850 students. (UC’s take thousands.)

Use the TRANSFER FORUM. Go read it. Also look–there is a special subforum for UC admissions questions.

OK, USC also has articulation agreements with CA CC’s. Read about it here and see a link to the agreement. Also there is more info on transferring classes and core requirements.

I’m sorry for the late reply. Thank you for all the info! I know a bit more on what I should be doing! I will be sure to utilize my resources at my CC and get in touch with people that can help me more personally!
