So I'm doing my first semester at a University in Michigan right now, and I'd like to transfer to U Mich for Fall 2007. Now what I was wondering is how they count credits.

So, when I submit my transcript in Feb/March, I'll be at 16 finished credits, and doing around 20-24...

When admissions looks at me for Fall of 2007, will they count me as 16 credits or 36-40? This is assuming I also send them in my mid-term grades for my Spring (next semester)

Mostly I have a pretty bad HS record (3.0 UW) and so far a 4.0 here and I can probably keep that up. Since I know more credits means less weight on HS grades, I know I'd have a pretty bad chance if I had only 16 credits, but a much better chance if I had closer to 36-40 credits.

They will view you as having 16 completed (because the good GPA on the credits for those are all they have to outweigh the HS GPA), but they will most likely ask for the mid-terms like you mentioned. Then they will view those keeping in mind how many credits they will leave you at. In addition, they'll likely ask what classes, if any, you would be taking after that semester but before transfer (such as over the summer).

Do you mind if I ask what University you are transfering from?

Western Michigan University. Ugh hate it here. Would it matter if I'm taking any classes over the summer? I was planning on interning or doing some volunteering overseas.

But ugh, that kind sucks for me. The other University I was applying for was NYU, and I know they count the credits that I'd be taking next semester; and they ask to see your midterm grades.

Well, I think that if your first semester grades are 4.0 and your mid-term grades for the second semester are 4.0 then they will try to look at it assuming a 4.0 for the 36-40 credits. I'd guess it would really limit how much they look at the HS grades. But if the first semester or mid-term grades were lower (like 3.5 or less) then they'd look back to HS for confirmation of a trend.

I finished 19cr with a 4.0 before applying, have now done another 13, and will be taking about 30 more before I would transfer. It sounded to me when talking to my admissions counselor that with the 32cr already done at this point they would not look near as much at my HS record.

Not taking courses in the summer will not hurt your chances as near as I can tell. The only thing I would see, is that transfer preference goes to Juniors and then Sophomores. The extra credits you might earn during that time would put you into the "Junior" transfer range, but then again something great like overseas volunteering sounds like it would offset that.
