If you decide to take the shuttle to the Santa Clara Station and then the Caltrain to the Palo Alto Station and then the Marguerite to campus, there's nothing you need to schedule in advance. I remember the shuttle and the Marguerite trips being free and paying three dollars (I think) for the Caltrain to get from Santa Clara to Palo Alto, but there was no reservations or anything necessary...

Public transportation is good if you don't have much luggage, but if you have heavy boxes or bags or anything I would advise taking a private shuttle for about $20-$25.

I'm going to have one giant (and very heavy) bag, and two light bags... how do I arrange a pickup for a private shuttle? Are they readily available at the airport? Do you recommend I ride private or public transportation?

i took a private shuttle to campus when i went in april. it was around $25 but it's a lot easier than switching transportation a few times, and faster. i just called one of the company's before hand to request a shuttle be there at a certain time just in case there weren't any available when i got there. but i actually ended up just going with one of the one's waiting at the airport b/c mine was late. there were plenty of taxis/shuttle waiting for customers. i believe they were towards the right when you left baggage claim. and make sure you get a shuttle b/c they have a flat rate and are A LOT cheaper than taxis.

Call Supershuttle. See supershuttle.com Stanford has an arranged discount program w/ them. You will need to call ahead of time to make reservations. it is about $17.
