I am considering a major in business. Could anyone explain what the difference between LSA and RC, esp. for applying as a senior? Also, if I were to go to the honors college, how would that affect taking business related classes?
Sorry if this makes no sense!

To major in business, you’d want to apply to the Ross School of Business. The school of business is ranked like #3 in the country for their BBA program, and is very competitive. If you get in U of M but don’t get in Ross, I guess the next closest thing is an econ major? o_O

would i have to apply as an incoming freshman though? And if I don’t get in, can I still apply to LSA or GC? (still don’t know the diff between the 2)

On your application, you can indicate that you’d like to be considered for Ross Pre-admit. HOWEVER, you have to get accepted into LSA, Engineering, etc. first before Ross will even see your application. If you do not get into Ross but still want to pursue a business degree, you can reapply after your freshman or sophomore years.

you can apply to the bschool once at michigan.

The honors college would not affect taking business related classes because some of the Ross pre-reqs have honors sections and in honors college you are expected only to take 2 honors classes per semester. Because honors college is part of lsa you would not be in the honors college after you transfer to Ross. RC is part of lsa and has its special requirements.

Yep, like krw said, you apply for pre-admit at the same time you apply to U of M. If you get accepted with pre-admit, then you’re all set to go (you still start business school sophomore year no matter what). If you get rejected pre-admit, you can apply again at the end of your freshman year.

This is all assuming you get accepted to U of M

Thanks!
I do plan on getting accepted, haha. Michigan is one of my target schools and I think I should have the stats and EC’s to get in.
So could you tell me more about honors college? What kind of curriculum is it (do I need to take a language, etc) and do I have to apply for LSA and Honors college? And if I were to get in, I would stay for 1 year, then try to get into Ross?

You can take some B-school classes without being in the B-school, such as accounting/finance if you’d like to do that and stay in LSA

that would certainly be an option, I think I could try that freshman year but I definitely want to get into Ross

Don’t plan on getting accepted. Ross only accepts about 100 pre-admits every year. It is very tough to get accepted.

I don’t plan on doing the preferred admission, I will try but I don’t plan on getting in. I do, however, expect that I should be able to get into U of M and apply freshman year.

Also, about Honors college. If I were to get in, could I take the honors classes in conjunction with some business electives?

Everyone in LSA has a language requirement that is equivalent to four semesters. There is a placement test and it is possible to place out if you are already proficient in a language. The requirement is the same for honors. I believe you get a degree in Ross without foreign language. The difference in honors is that you are expected to take two honors courses every semester in freshman and sophomore years. Certain courses such as math are honors courses. Other courses such as history have special discussion sections for students in the honors program. Also honors has a great books course instead of the typical freshman writing course. In junior and senior years the focus of honors is on the honors thesis as part of a concentration. The honors college also has its own advisors and sometimes it is easier for them to pull strings for you. I don’t know honors works in the sophomore year if you are admitted to Ross.

@krw

Ross accepts about 250, not 100, students into the BBA program every year. Only about 100 of them choose to attend.
