Question about UC Berkeley

College Board says that UCB only accepts 2% of its applicants outside of the top 10%. Is this true, and if so, is there something I'm overlooking? Because I mean, ivies and other elites save 10% of their spots for non top 10%ers, so this is a little hard to imagine.

All the UCs put a very large emphasis of their decision on academics, especially GPA, so it's very likely that the figure is true.

From last year's admission rates...90.5% of incoming freshman had UC GPA's of at least 4.0.

And of all the applicants last year that had under a 3.99 UC GPA, only 674 of 16134 were admitted. That's around 4 percent.

The difference is that ivies are taking kids from public and private schools all over the Country where you can still be a very high achiever and not be in the top 10%. At Berkeley the vast majority are CA public school kids and at these schools all high achievers will be in the top 10%.

Dang, I hope that's not true kirmum, because the only reason I didn't apply to berkeley was because I heard that if you weren't top 10 you wouldn't have a chance. I mean, my UC GPA is a 4.4, although my rank is still 51/430, although I did jump one hundred ranks in two years. So would I have really had a decent chance out of state with these stats, and a 1340 sat?

Out of state with a 4.4 and a 1340 sounds is a bit above average for an instater (4.15 and 1340 were the averages for 2003 admits). The admissions board doesn't see your rank outside of ELC, which wouldn't be applicable for you since you're out of state. I don't remember the stats for out of staters, but it's definitely higher than the average for instate applicants.

does that mean i would have had a chance?

what if you were an instater with a 3.90 UC GPA.....can u still get in? and i go to northwood high school; i dont know if it means much, but everyone here says it will help a lot cus the UCs like our school a lot....

and squirrel...i dont know if u are instate or not, but if ur instate, u should be fine....i know people who got in wit those stats..or similar at least...but if its out of state, im not too sure then

Unfortunately I didn't apply based on misconception, but I'm out of state. I just wanna know whether it was worth applying.
