Hi. :) I am a bit confused about what being ELC really means in regards to UC admission. It says that an ELC student is guaranteed admission to at least one UC school. So if I only applied to UCLA, would that mean I'm guaranteed admission to UCLA?

No. You’re not guaranteed to the school of your choice. UCLA does not offer ELC admissions.

You’re guaranteed admission to at least UC school, but that school isn’t of your choosing. Don’t just apply to one UC.

One or two UCs will open up the campus to ELC students, meaning that they will offer admission to any ELC student that applies. This generally applies to the “lower-tier” UCs like Merced, Riverside, Santa Barbara, Davis, or Irvine. I haven’t heard of UCLA, UC Berkeley, or UCSD offering guaranteed ELC admissions.

You should be receiving a letter from one of the aforementioned UCs stating your ELC eligibility and your guaranteed admission there.

Oh, okay. So it’s pretty much not worth anything, then? Because obviously anyone in the top 4% of their class would get into Merced, Riverside, et cetera anyway. Oh, well!

But do I actually have to apply to the low-tier UC schools? Or would they just let me in without even seeing an application from me? (Doesn’t really matter since I wouldn’t want to go to one of them anyway; just curious how the whole ELC thing works.)

Of course it’s worth something. It guarantees you have a fallback. That’s all there is to it. It would be silly to think you can force the UC system to guarantee you admission to a top ranking institution.

You have to actually apply to get in. Last year I got offered ELC admission to Irvine, Davis, and Riverside, but the only one of those I applied to was Irvine so the only school I was guaranteed to get into was Irvine.

Technically, you could have a really bad SAT score but still be in the top 4%. Then, ELC would help.

You would still have to apply to the UCs which offered you provisional ELC admission in order to get into the school. UCs which offer guaranteed ELC admissions sent letters around this time notifying you of your eligibility, so you would know which schools to apply to if you wanted to take advantage of ELC.

Ah, okay, thanks for the info, guys! :)

Ah, okay, thanks for the info, guys! :)

^^^ You don’t even have to apply to be guaranteed… yes, most top 4% ELCer’s do get into better schools so they have no real need for the guarantee, but, the guarantee does two things…

If you do choose to apply to a lower tier school, like merced, they will try to entice you w/ automatic acceptance, possible scholarships, honors programs, etc…

If you only applied to Cal and UCLA and were denied from both, your application would then be forwarded to Riverside/Merced/etc and one of them would have to take you, so if you were unlucky enough to get denied everywhere, you can just pay the application fee after you already know you’ve been accepted. --I know that was a little unclear, but I hope you understand.

Good Luck!

They will send you the mail guaranteeing a spot before you send in the application.

haha yeah cuz im in ELC right now (just got my letters from davis, sb, and irvine) and i dont think i did too well on the SAT’s, so me being in ELC would help me alot. my friends all took SAT classes and i was like *** man cuz i dont have the money, like $1500 for elite

I only took that shiz once and that was in october and am waiting for my test results. lol I havent even taken any sat2’s yet (gonna do it this november) and am gonna retake SAT1 in december. haha so if i cant get into ucsd, then ima either go to davis or irvine, probably not sb

congrats diablo! At least you have some good choices. Good luck on your tests!
