well right now i'm a senior, and i just transfered schools. im my old school, which i've been there from 7-11th grades, my class rank was top 20% (it is a very rigorous school, tested to get in). however, when i transfered to my new school for senior year, my class rank is not top 3%. based on this 3%, i know that i am eligible for ELC. however, i have heard that your transcript is sent in during junior year, in which my rank was only in the top 20%.

is there anything i can do to get the elc qualification? this seems unfair for me and everyone as the old school was ridiculously competitive.

Most admissions at colleges allow you (when you apply) to write something about any "special" reasons why you think your grades or circumstances are unique. However, colleges have many other ways to sort students besides using just class rank. For instance, many colleges place more emphasis on your essay...which can make or break your chances. Other colleges, feel different about essays and prefer to use other ways to find out about you. Finally, the reality of applying is that you are among many others that have good to excellent grades, SAT/ACT's/Volunteer Hours....and on and on. How do they choose? Sometimes it's geographical......meaning that you may have better chances getting into a college that hasn't had many students from your area get in. It's also, to some degree, based on race and gender. Colleges like diversity in all areas. Rice University for example looks for students that are not always the absolute best in the class, but looks for students that have other unique attributes.

This is one you should have checked by your counselor with the officials of ELC. The info published on ELC does not answer the specific question. Indication is that you may not qualify -- ELC status is determined in summer right after junior year with notice in Fall of senior year and at time of status determination you were with old high school. Nevertheless, you should have this checked and do so before they start sending ELC notifications.

Not yet. If I remember from my son two years ago it will be in a few more weeks. Please don't forget that ELC only guarantees you admission into one of the UCs. Not the one you choose.
My son was ELC. Got into UC Irvine but NOT UCLA. Did not attend a UC.

UCs send out ELC nofication on a rolling basis, starting in late August, primarily based on when your HS submitted last year's transcripts.. UC used to send out the student notice at the same time it sent out the school notice. But, to allow time for GCs to correct any errors, the UC now sends out student notifications ten days after the school notifications.
