Question about UCSB classes!! Thank you

Hi,

1) My brother is going to transfer to UCSB and he is going to be doing economics and accounting track at UCSB in this coming fall and he is wondering how difficult it is?

2) So what do you think he should take in the first quarter as a transfer student ?

3) Are there many GE classes he need to fulfill in order to graduate(he has IGETC)?

4) How many classes he need to take in order to graduate in economics and accounting major?

5) Does he need to declare major? If so, how?

6) Also, are there any specific information he need to know because he missed the orientation

Thank you very much

Just type in “ucsb business economics accounting” in google. Third link down should be a pdf with all the major requirements. You need to finish pre-reqs with a 2.85 to get into the major.

All I know is that the major is very challenging.

As a Business Econ major (the major that “Econ and Accounting” is replacing), I can only tell you that it’s different for every person. My impression so far is that it’s a lot harder to be kicked out of the full major than it is to be kicked out the pre-major.

ECON 100A (Intermediate Microeconomics) and ECON 118 (Financial Accounting Analysis) are two classes that are prerequisites for many other courses in the Economics department, and in the Econ and Accounting major. Whatever classes he can find for the other one or two classes he wants to take should be fine.

I’m not familiar with a lot of what transfer students have to deal with, but here’s a link from the advising department that might help you out:
[Letters & Science Academic Advising :: Advice for New Transfer Students to UCSB](http://www.advising.ltsc.ucsb.edu/transfer/newtr.php#ge)

Here’s the PDF of the major sheet: http://my.sa.ucsb.edu/Catalog/Current/Documents/Undergrad%20Major%20Sheets/Econ&Accounting-BA-2010.pdf

Thirteen upper-division courses are required, on top of the 8 pre-major/lower-division courses.

He can declare the major once he’s completed the pre-major courses (listed on the PDF I linked to above). If he did that at his community college, he’s fine, and just needs to handle paperwork at the Economics department office in North Hall. If he hasn’t completed all of those courses, I’d say he’s got a while before he can declare (and then be able to take those ECON 100A/118 courses I mentioned before).

That’s a tall order! I wouldn’t know where to start, besides maybe getting familiar with GOLD.
