question about UCSD

Why is UCSD ranked so high when so many people hate it? I don't understand..

for example, people say that UCSD professors don't care about their students, academics are mediocre at best...but why then is UCSD ranked so high and also considered one of the happiest campuses in the nation? I don't get it.

It’s ranked so high because the majority of people thoroughly enjoy themselves there while receiving a first-rate education. The vast majority of those people do not read College Confidential; what you will see here are balanced and thoughtful opinions from those who do attend (or formerly attended) in response to those who post misconceptions about UCSD, or to share useful information in general.

My eldest daughter attends UCSD, and our middle daughter, currently a high school senior, is now torn between deciding on UCSD, where she has spent a lot of time and knows she loves it there, and UCLA, which while quite hyped up on College Confidential, did not diminish one drop of her enthusiasm for UCSD after attending UCLA’s Bruin Day – we are from Los Angeles.

What poster “HappyDaddie” wrote about the benefits of UCSD is true for us, and our daughter is a non-science major in Sixth College (her sister would be the same as well): http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-california-san-diego/906765-has-anyone-here-turned-down-ucla-ucsd-post12433215.html#post12433215

Since every college experience is what the individual makes of it, the “makings” are extraordinary at UCSD, however, almost all of the people busy doing their thing there are not spending time on this board trying to defend ignorant (meant only as without knowledge/awareness) stereotypes.

so i should take the negative reviews/haters on UCSD with a grain of salt then?

you should take everything you see here with a grain of salt. only you can determine what your UCSD experience is like.

Things like this make me scratch my head. I hear a lot of things like this from uninformed high schoolers who get their information from uninformed high schoolers, so be careful where you get your information and realize that not everybody will have the same experience at UCSD as well.

i am visiting UCSD soon! what do you guys think i should do to best get an idea of the campus? go on a school day? take a tour? thank you

When I visited on a weekend, they campus seemed pretty empty. When I was there on Monday, though, it was really busy and seemed a lot more active. Have you already been accepted? If so, go see your college and its dorms, dining hall, etc.

yes i have been accepted  i attended admit day which was on a saturday but i came a little late and the place was a little dead too (Revelle plaza) so a school day should be good then
