Question about Umich GPA

I have a 3.3 UMich GPA because of having 4 B+'s sophomore year and 2 B+ in junior year plus the fact that I took the hardest courseload possible both years. My weighted GPA at school is fairly decent a 4.3W/5 and 3.8UW soph and junior year. How will they look at my transcript in this type of situation?

I also have a 3.3 UM GPA, which is very low ( have/ will take many rigious courses as well).
They may consider the classes you’ve taken, but probably won’t put much thought into the weighted and unweighted set by your school. Perhaps this could be a reasons ( besides the fact of UMICH being difficult to get accepted into) why many students with such high GPA’s ( not speaking of UM GPA) get rejected, since their UM GPA was low. Probably unlike you, I’m taking the SAT in october due to my bad ACT score ( long story), perhaps do you have a high standardize test score?

From what I know, most people accepted into UMich are those with the hardest course load possible and a 3.6+ gpa. The reason they calculate their own GPA is to see how you did on core subjects, and the fact that you didn’t do well on these subjects won’t be a good thing. Unless you have a big hook and good test scores, UMich is probably a reach for you.

Your UW GPA will help with your class rank, but that’s about it I think.

i have 2270 SATs 770 math ii 790 chem and 750 us hist, 5 on us hist and chem APs thats considered pretty good right?

Yeah your SAT score is great, I think you can also send your AP test scores ( but doubt that would be a deciding factor) just to show your effort in core classes.
Are you in-state? If so I would say that will help your chances of admission.

Yeah your SAT is great. Are your classes just difficult at your school?

No i’m not instate and yes my classes are pretty difficult a 4.5W is top 2% (top 10 kids basically) The average gpa accepted into Umich from my school is a 4.15-4.2 Thats why I was a little surprised that you said it was going to be a reach for me. Though my guess is those kids took easier classes. There is a significant drop in difficulty from Honors/AP to regular classes. Does this information change any evaluations?

They will look at your entire application when making a decision. The unweighted GPA is the first thing they look at but they also look at your school’s profile, the rigor of your coursework and your test scores. Your GPA is lower than most of the students who are accepted but students with your GPA are accepted.

“That’s why I was a little surprised that you said it was going to be a reach for me.”

I said its a reach because your UM GPA, the only statistic you supplied is 3.3 and that’s really, really low. You should provide a lot more stats if you want people to give you a good estimate of your chances.

If you go to a really difficult high school and a 3.3 UM GPA is actually good at your school, then you’ll have a better chance. Still, I doubt UM accepts many OOS students with a 3.3 unless they have some other major hook. Also, UM won’t care about your weighted GPA at all. Most people who attend UM are those who take advanced classes anyways. I stand by what I said earlier. Reach.
