Question about Unifieds

I am looking for feedback from those who have auditioned in the past at Unifieds in Chicago. I understand that some schools are there longer than the actual Unified school's schedule. About how many auditions were you able to fit in during your entire time in Chicago? I am thinking that my daughter will also need to attend Unifieds in another city also to fit in all the needed auditions.

My D only scheduled two per day, and we were there all three days. She could have easily fit in a number of drop-ins (all of which were at the Palmer House), but only one interested her, and she regrets not auditioning for them, just too tired.

It depends on what schools your daughter is interested in, and if they are at the Palmer house. Some of the schools are near by, but if they do go over in time, it can be hard to make it to another venue in time. D’s Juilliard audition was at least a 3 1/2-4 hrs long (that was audition plus the wait for call backs, and no one left).

The straight theater auditions go very quickly…at least they did in LA. You could do several a day…

Although my D only had 2 per day, you could do 3. It does depend on your kid

We did 2 a day, 6 over 3 days. 3 of the auditions were NOT at Palmer house, and that factored with time

With the number of schools my daughter is applying to, it looks like we will need to try to attend Unifieds in LA as well as Chicago. I am hoping the Chapman will have audition times available around Unified weekend since we planned on going out there for her to audtion anyway. I have to say that figuring out a schedule for these auditions is stressful not to mention the cost!

Schedule early!! It’s crazy as it is, imagine when the dates start getting filled…

@Bisouu will know about Chapman. I am pretty sure her D applied there

Yes my daughter auditioned for Chapman, but we did EA so she auditioned end of October. But if I remember right they had dates available much later than that.

I know in Chicago some non-unified schools hold auditions in a different hotel. Does anyone know if this is true for LA also? And a question specifically for bisouu, was the Chapman audition fairly brief? It sounds like you are in and out fairly quickly.

Purchase, Syracuse, BU were held at a separate hotel from LA Unifieds. About half a mile down the street from the Westin. Chapman Auditions were fairly brief I would say less than 15 minutes. My daughter got some redirection and briefly interviewed so on the whole it was the longest of her auditions (except Montclair). Most lasted 5-7 minutes.

Thanks Bisouu. We have been following the journey of all of you the past year to learn from your experiences. Despite that, it is an incredibly overwhelming process so any advice from you veterns is greatly appreciated!

NYU was at a different hotel at Chicago unifieds than the “official” (Palmer House) Not sure if that is true in LA

My S did nine at Chicago (three per day), plus three callbacks. A few were in locations other than Palmer House. The biggest issue is scheduling. Get your auditions scheduled as quickly as possible. Then you will have to reschedule because you will have conflicts. The schools are really good about helping you reschedule. Some schools are easy (e.g., UArts lets you schedule yourself online - pick the exact time you want). Others are more challenging (email back and forth until you get the right time). Then be prepared to improvise while there – my S was in a Coastal Carolina callback that he thought was going to last 10 minutes but ended up going over an hour which cut into his UMich audition; so I went to the UMich room and explained the situation and they were great about moving his audition time. It is crazy and busy, but a lot of fun! Good luck!
