Question about waitlist

“If the University is unable to offer you a place in Class of 2021 (to begin classes in the fall of 2017), would you
like to be considered for a place in the Class of 2022 (to begin classes in the fall of 2018) after taking a gap year?”

Does saying Yes to this question mean you are automatically considered for the Class of 2022/your chances of getting into the Class of 2021 decrease/no impact is made on your possible acceptance to the Class of 2021?

Obviously I’d prefer attending the Class of 2021 but anything I’d do for UChicago haha.

Congratulations.

You are no longer on the wait list, you are admitted for next year, if you accept, you will be going to Chicago in 2018.

Good luck

^ I don’t think this is being accepted Z-List. I think this is just asking if you’re willing to be accepted off the Z-List (i.e. conditionally, after taking a gap year).

Is this part of their current waitlist page on the website? It wasn’t there in the previous cycle

My daughter got the same question. She declined the gap year possibility but accepted a place on the regular waitlist. She assumed it was a question posed to all on the waitlist.

I would think everyone would receive the same question, but to think you would automatically be in for next year would be ridiculous. Don’t know why a “senior member” would bs like that

Is this a new question this year? I understand they did not have this question last year?

@b4sicallyid0work
I think that’s how it works though. Based on reading old waitlist threads, the admissions counselors review the pool of the waitlist that said that they would take a gap year, and they select some of them to join the next year’s class. I don’t think it’s conditional as to be on the waitlist, you’ll have to be qualified to go to UChicago. However indicating that you want to take a gap year doesn’t mean that you’ll definitely will get admitted off the waitlist.

@denydenzig

As far as I can tell by reading old threads, this has been an option for at least 3 years.

@Meganerd2012 They’ve definitely been doing this for some time but if this is on the portal then it would be the first year that they’ve explicitly stated it.

How many people accepted the gap year option?

That question might need a new thread.

For the past three years, they offer limited/selected applicants on the waitlist to take a seat for the next cycle providing the applicants is going to take a meaningful gap year. If there are changes to that scheme, I do not know and am not aware of, its news to me. Obviously, if they ask every waitlisted applicant that question, it is not an offer for admission, but just an question to the applicant.

Will it make sense if I said yes to the gap year offer and then sent an email of continued interest regarding class 2021?

Why would your letter of continuing interest be class specific? Do you only have an interest in being in the class of 2021?

I think it would make sense. You’re simply saying that you would take a gap year in order to be considered for the class or 2022 but you still remain interested in being part of the class of 2021.

CU123 Correct, Exactly on point. Basically I’m trying to say that I’m okay with taking a gap year but still I prefer being a part in the class of 2021.
