I was invited to one of Duke's minority recruitment weekends, and the following weekend I am going also for a scholarship interview there. The week before these two I have interviews at another college. I will miss 7 days of class if I go, and this is the time of year when our two huge senior papers are due. My parents/counselor say that going to the minority weekend shows interest and could help me get the scholarship, but at the same time the school is 4 hours away from my house. Should I go to this minority weekend and just be diligent and do my work, or not? For last scholarship weekend, missing 3 days of physics was very hard.

Just some opinion from outside the fam would be nice. Of course I love Duke and it is one of my top 3 choices.

You sound like a dedicated student like my youngest. No way would she ever miss 7 days of class. Her siblings tell her to relax, it's 2nd semester senior year, but she wants to maintain her top grades. If I were you, I'd skip the recruitment weekend, but make sure the admin people know why you are not attending. I think the scholarship interview the following weekend is much more important. If you miss all those classes and have 2 huge papers to do, you will be much too stressed out. Cut yourself some slack. I wish you the best of luck with Duke (my daughter has applied also and there's no way we could even visit the campus this year, what with volleyball and other ecs.)

Agreed with MaryC - I think it is important to let Duke know why you can't come to one of the events (as you might imagine, with the various recruiting and scholarship events going on, sometimes the left hand doesn't know what either the right hand or the left foot are doing) but you should definitely prioritize things appropriately - scholarship opportunities are certainly a high priority; so is being faithful to your last semester in high school (academically AND socially). If you are coming for a scholarship interview, I would think the recruitment weekend folks would take that as clear interest in the school as well as an opportunity for you to get to know us better.

Hey all,
I'm a finalist for a Duke scholarship. What other perks are available to Duke scholars other than the mentoring, travel allowance and study abroad? For instance, do scholars have the option to register early for classes (i.e., before the rest of the Duke student population)? I know of one scholarship in another university that allows students to register for classes after the grad students and before the seniors which I thought was really cool. Do scholarship recipients get extra assistance in their senior year when it comes to applying for grad/professional schools and applying for scholarships, etc.? Feedback from current scholars is appreciated.
