Question about what math class I should take next term

So far I have taken Honors Geometry and Honors Algebra II. Next term I’m taking my last math class. I’m currently signed up for a 6-week online course at a community college for Elementary Statistics. However, I’m considering scrapping that in favor of self-studying Pre-Cal. So, I have a few questions…

1.) Would Pre-Cal look infinitely better than Statistics?
2.) Would it make a big difference if I take regular Pre-Cal or Honors Pre-Cal?
3.) Would getting an A/A+ in Stats look better than possibly getting a C or B in Honors Pre-Cal?
4.) Is taking Honors Geometry, Honors Alg II, and either Stats or Pre-Cal good enough to get into Brown? While it is only 3 years of math (as opposed to the 4 they recommend), I have taken 6 years of social science that might balance it out?

Thanks in advance for any advice. :)

yes

honors is much better. AP is ideal.

get an A in honors pre-calc. (Since this is a class you are taking second semester, Brown and other colleges will probably not see this grade until the summer, after you have already been accepted. So I’m not sure this question is even relevant.)

Didn’t you ask this question already?

Bottomline: Brown gets thousands of applications from students who have taken 6 years of social science plus linear algebra. Yes, your lack of math will hurt you. Will you still get accepted – perhaps, some get in like this every year. Since we are not the admissions committee we have no clue if you will be so lucky. So apply, convince them you are wonderful, keep your fingers crossed, but make sure you have a good range of safeties and matches for your other applications.

(P.S.: I am not a math person myself and I think it stinks that Brown and other selective schools want their humanities and social science students to take and excel in calculus. It is not a trend that I like.)

Thanks, fireandrain! I will sign up for Honors Pre-Cal, then, and try my best to get an A. But hypothetically, if I got accepted to Brown and then sent them my final transcript and I got less than an A in Honors Pre-Cal…it’s not like they would rescind my admission unless I got a D or F, right?

Also, is it just a myth that Brown cares the least about math/science out of all the Ivies? One person who got into Brown with a 630 in math said that Brown doesn’t expect its students to be great at everything, and as long as they have a passion in one area, the other might not be so influential. Is that valid at all?

It is more than a myth – it is a total fallacy, and one that Brown spends a tremendous amount of time trying to overcome. Brown has spent a LOT of money on its science facilities, and is committed to accepting science and math majors. It is working very hard – and at times, it seems futilely – at dispelling the rumor that Brown is only for humanities and social science people.

As I’ve said before, every applicant is viewed on a case-by-case basis. Ideally, Brown wants all its students to have 700+ SATs in all 3 areas. Yes, exceptions are made – but for students who bring something else to the table that Brown wants.

Okay, good to know. Thanks. :)

Also, there was another question in my post that I was wondering if you’d answer: hypothetically, if I got accepted to Brown and then sent them my final transcript and I got less than an A in Honors Pre-Cal…it’s not like they would rescind my admission unless I got a D or F, right?

I’ve never heard of anyone being rescinded or threatened they may be rescinded unless they were in serious of danger of failing a course.

Okay, good. So as long as I manage to get a C, I’d be in good shape if I were accepted to Brown? That’s relieving. Of course, I will still try to get an A, but it’s just good to know.
